The second volume of Sir Ernest Satow's diaries, 1912-1920 sees the publication of his seminal 'Guide to Diplomatic Practice' in 1917, and preparations for the publication of 'A Diplomat in Japan' in 1921, while he continues to lead a very full and active life in Ottery St. Mary, Devon.This volume includes the index to both volumes, maps and photographs of the town. The foreword by T.G. Otte, bibliography and Satow family tree are in Volume One. This is a world first publication.

In memory of Lieutenant Ian L. MacDonald of the Black Watch, one of so many young lives sacrificed by the cruelty and tragedy of the Second World War. He was born in Scotland, but spent his early years in Chile before returning aged 13 to school at Loretto near Edinburgh (September 1936-July 1941). He died aged 21 leading his platoon in an attack on a "farmhouse" (actually a pill-box) near Goch, Germany on 25 February 1945, very shortly before the war in Europe ended. Photographs, explanatory footnotes and appendices have been added to the transcription of the handwritten manuscript which was written as part of the grieving process in 1945-46 by Alexander MacDonald (1894-1954), father of Ian MacDonald and grandfather of the editor. This non-fiction book was first written in 1940, but could not be published in wartime conditions because paper was scarce, and minds were not on leisure pursuits. It was revised in the early 1950s. The author's love of the sport of fishing and of his adopted country Chile shines through the book, along with his gentle humour. It was his hope and intention to introduce the wonderful fly fishing in Chile to an English-reading audience. Now at last this fine book is published. The editor has added a brief biography of the author, footnotes and a preface, but otherwise the manuscript is as it was in 1952.
