Der Zweck der von dem bedeutenden Musikwissenschaftler Hugo Riemann neu entwickelten Lehrmethode beschreibt der Autor folgendermaßen: "Eine vernünftige Kunstlehre kann nur anstreben, die bequemste und nutzbringendste Form der Mitteilung dessen zu finden, was technisches Gemeingut der Künstler ist, das Verständnis des Faktur der Meisterwerke zu erschließen, den Prozess der Assimilation, der Aufnahme des von andern geleisteten in das eigene Vorstellungsvermögen zu erleichtern, überhaupt die Phantasie zu üben und vor Ein­seitigkeit zu bewahren."
