Peace found only in Christ Reason for peace found in Christ's completed work New edition of classic work
Foreword by Erwin W. Lutzer"It is no easy matter to write a book for the family of God. Yet it is for them that these thoughts on chastisement are written." So begins Horatius Bonar's classic work on how Christians should deal with grief in face of a faith that knows God to be good. Bonar mines Scripture and the wisdom of the church to reveal that God's ways, while not our ways, are intended to manifest righteousness. Indeed, the author argues that earthly bonds may be broken not to bring believers sorrow, but in order to draw them closer to an eternal relationship with God.Profound and timeless, When God's Children Suffer reminds Christians that God will not abandon them but will instead extend grace to His children, giving them "beauty for ashes."
This book contains two parts. The first is an updated and abriged version of Horatius Bonarâ¿s book The Everlasting Righteousness, first published in 1874. Its central theme is the substitutionary work of Jesus Christ. Bonar shows that, in Jesus Christ, God has provided the only way to deal with the problem of our sin. Because Jesus is the perfect substitute, anyone who believes in him receives a legal pardon from God, and the perfect righteousness of Jesus becomes theirs. This truth has enormous consequences for believers, and Bonar explains some of them in this wonderful book. The second part is an updated version of Regeneration by J. C. Ryle, about the new birth. Ryle addresses what it means to be born again, and what it looks like in the life of a Christian.
In this manual of Christian faith, Scottish minister and author Horatius Bonar investigates the words of God with respect to the human condition.Throughout the Bible, God?s words are relayed by messengers and prophets. In the various dialogues received from the Lord, the views of the divine regarding His creation mankind are revealed. It is through these descriptions that Horatius Bonar commences his investigation of God?s correspondences with man; gradually, the character of the Lord is revealed, and his intentions and purposes for humanity unveiled. The event which most richly demonstrates God?s connection with human beings is the birth and life of Jesus Christ. Bonar notes the significance of the blood shed by Jesus is connected with the blood shed by Abel during the Book of Genesis. Furthermore the teachings and sermons of Christ reveal God?s views on mankind and its destiny. The importance of man acknowledging his own fallibility and flaws ? of discarding his insensibility ? is expounded upon.
