George Frédéric Philippe de Hardenberg, - ou pour le désigner par le pseudonyme sous lequel il est connu dans l'histoire littéraire, Novalis - naquit le 2 mai 1772 à Wiederstedt, dans le comté de Mansfeld, sur le bien patrimonial de son père, le baron Henri Ulric Erasme de Hardenberg.Son enfance s'écoula dans un milieu sans lumière et sans joie.Le château familial des Hardenberg était un vieux couvent du XIIIe siècle, aux fortes murailles dominées par une tour massive, aux fenêtres cintrées entourées de vigne vierge, avec de grandes pièces hautes de plafond et de longs corridors sonores. He was among the first to write on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, about whom he published widely throughout his life. He also wrote books on Heinrich Heine, Richard Wagner and Novalis, and translated the works of Goethe and the Nibelungenlied.
