Die berühmte Frauenrechtlerin und Bildungsreformerin Helene Lange nahm in der bürgerlichen Frauenbewegung im Deutschland des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts eine bedeutende Rolle ein. Sie forderte, dass die Bildung von Mädchen und Frauen nicht länger durch Männer determiniert und kontrolliert werden dürfe und kämpfte für den verbesserten Zugang ihres Geschlechts zu höheren Bildungseinrichtungen. In der vorliegenden Studie zeichnet Lange - ausgehend vom frühen Mittelalter - die Entwicklung des höheren Mädchenschulwesens in Deutschland nach.
