    Heinrich Smidt (1798-1867) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Seine Erfahrungen auf See und seine Kenntnisse von Land und Leuten verwertete er in zahlreichen Erzählungen, Novellen, Romanen, Theaterstücken sowie Jugendbüchern, die ihm den Ruf eines „deutschen Marryat" einbrachten. In seinen Seegeschichten und -gedichten hat er mehrfach das Motiv des Fliegenden Holländers verwendet. Aus dem Buch: „Es hat zu allen Zeiten in der guten Stadt Hamburg Straßenjungen gegeben, die ehrsamer Bürgerschaft zum Verdruß gereichten, allein niemals, weder vorher oder nachher, war es ärger damit bestellt, als in der letzten Hälfte des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts. Die Winkeljungen, wie man sie nannte, weil sie in allen Ecken und Winkeln hausten, trieben es arg in jenen Zeiten. Von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht erbten ihre Unarten fort und steigerten sich bis in das Unglaubliche, weshalb ein hochedler Rat sich darüber in hellem Zorn erging und viele scharfe Mandate erließ, um dem Unfug zu steuern und die Uebeltäter zu bestrafen. Allein nichts vermochten die Väter der Stadt gegen die wilde Meute, die sich unversehens in Masse zusammenfand und eben so unversehens wieder verschwand."
