This beautifully illustrated book celebrates some of the best-loved dolls' houses from the V&A Museum of Childhood. Published to accompany a new exhibition, Dolls' Houses presents specially commissioned photography detaling the astonishing skill and craftsmanship required to create these homes in miniature scale.
From the exquisite 1673 Nuremburg House, to the 21st century Kaleidoscope House, from lavish country mansions to cosy suburban villas, this book explores some of the most beautiful and historically significant dolls¿ houses, giving unique insights into their fascinating roles as both domestic teaching aids and records of contemporary lifestyle.
The earliest known dolls' house was made in Bavaria in the mid-sixteenth century. Like most of those built in the following 250 years, it was designed not to be played with, but to be a perfect representation in miniature of a princely house, and to reflect the wealth of the owner. This book outlines the history of these little buildings.
