In questo libro l'Autore riprende una vecchia tesi di laurea che riguarda lo studio linguistico giovanile di Graziadio Isaia Ascoli sulle affinità tra il friulano e il rumeno. Il suo lavoro mette in luce l'ambiente storico e geografico degli anni giovanili di Ascoli e lo sviluppo della linguistica nella prima metà dell'Ottocento con una rapida esposizione biografica degli studiosi più importanti cui avrebbe potuto attingere Ascoli per il suo saggio, che in età più matura definirà un "lavoruccio insignificantissimo".In realtà da questa analisi linguistica emerge che il celebre linguista goriziano non possedeva ancora le competenze professionali che gli permettevano di cogliere a fondo gli aspetti della disciplina che si stava delineando proprio in quegli anni in tutta Europa.La conseguenza finale di questo studio è la conoscenza approfondita delle particolarità fonetiche e morfologiche del friulano e del rumeno, cui si è voluto affiancare per ragioni di comodità analitica - dove necessario - anche l'italiano.
