The findings of the study challenge a historical determinism which removes Catholics from the mainstream of early-modern society.

This book is about the struggles of the "palm oil ruffians" on the west coast of Africa in the latter days of the slave trade, in the area now known as Nigeria. Their struggles led to the formation of the Royal Niger Company Chartered and Limited.
