Simon Lesser is a man at a crossroads - seated in the kitchen of his Brooklyn apartment with a corpse lying on the floor next to him, typing furiously on his laptop. As he tries to make sense of the life that brought him to this point, he's convinced that everyone and everything is overwhelmed by chaos. With that thought in mind, he tells a story he wishes to strip of the trappings and art of storytelling and relate the cold facts of its random absurdity in a series of non-linear events. He traces his life as a secret, fetishistic enthusiast for female bodybuilders (called a "Schmoe"), then as a bodybuilding competitor himself, his marriage to German competitive bodybuilder Martina and his love affair with world class professional bodybuilder Erika Verletzen, an impassioned, indomitable lunatic. Erika brings WWFP Pro Jurg Betrug into the mix. Jurg, a menacing gangster of the German criminal "milieu," has plans for all involved. But what about the corpse on the floor? Just what will Simon do with the body and with himself? Meanwhile, time is ticking away - and the corpse on the floor is beginning to stink!

What Charisma does literally takes his breath away - she introduces Bob to "Breath Play," a game of denying oxygen for sexual pleasure.Frightened, guilty, but almost immediately addicted to this game, Bob suddenly has a secret life in a secret world of other players. It's not depravity that obsesses him but the discovery of being suspended between worlds, truth and lies, life and death. Bob's secret turns sinister when members of the elite of The Arena start dying off. Bob tries to blow the whistle, but the police won't listen. Bob has no one to turn to and nowhere to go - a dangerous predicament once he discovers that he's about to be the next casualty.

The heroes are Null, a man with neither feelings nor humanity, a near automaton of vengeance, and Boyd, a woman who has lost everything in her life that meant anything to her, ruled by guilt and a sense of duty at war with her compassion. Criminal psychopath Dr. Benway, who saved Null's sanity with an illegal, experimental therapy, has invented a new designer street drug delivered by a stick of gum. His plan is to distribute the gum, known as "the Chaw", to Boston and Cambridge clubs for free to create demand. But when the Ecstasy-like sensual pleasure wears off, the after-effect is a murderous, violent rage. Micmac Indian high-rise construction "edgewalker" and mob enforcer Filmore Lakeworry, known as "Lumpy" for his short, thick stature, forces a partnership with Benway at gunpoint. Null and Boyd set out to stop them, but Null changes his mind as the Chaw restores to him some of his lost humanity and Boyd can't charge Benway because his specially concocted drug isn't illegal. Null falls into a short-lived, drug-driven romance with Boyd, ending with him tearing up the streets with extreme violence that ultimately installs him as the "Meth King" of Boston.
