Rebecca watched the light November snow swirl around in her mother's grave as the casket was lowered to its final resting place. She focused on the snow. She couldn't think about the casket and what it meant. She was only twelve after all. She had never known her father. He was a soldier and died when she was a baby. Now her mother was gone-killed in a car crash._________________________________________________________________________________________________Rebecca loses her mother and then goes to live on a 160 acre farm in central Minnesota with her Grandmother, Naomi. The farm seems magical with gravel hills, ancient oaks, fertile valleys and a 12 acres pond clean enough to swim in and deep enough to fish in even in Winter. Naomi can see how hard losing her mother has been on Rebecca so she tells her a wonderful but magical secret that involves something that flies with wings! (You'll have to read the book yourself to find out the details of the whole secret). This young adult fiction tale is as adventurous as can be. It's so much fun to read a book with a young female heroine for a nice change. From Chapter 15: The Battle: "As Rebecca surveyed the battle, she noticed the trolls seemed tobe trying to separate Naomi from her team. Several surrounded herand though she fought fiercely, Rebecca feared she couldn't defeatthem all. Again, without thinking she rushed to her defense. She flew inever smaller circles, picking off trolls as she went. Soon she was firingat point blank range."The story is satisfying to read. Its presentation is amazing grabbing hold of the spectacular or fantastical and making it all seem very real to the reader. The characterizations are drawn out well making them seem believable and likable.Green's prose is experienced and effective. He is definitely up to the task of creating this original and magnificent world where his story takes place. The imagination soars while reading this new book. Green has brought such a wonderful character or really characters to very real life. It will be interesting to see how the main character's (Rebecca) story develops if an additional book or two is to follow this one. This book is a celebration of sorts. It also blends in characters from the beloved Camelot story, too!Green has given us a marvelous and active adventure. He has put together a fast-paced story you will fall head over heels for. Indian Gaming Business wrote, "Class Act, Gary Green has brought Las Vegas flamboyance¿and big profits to Indian Country."Casino City Times called him "The Donald Trump of Indian Casinos" and in fact he is a former Trump Vice-President.How did these casinos come into being? Are the games "legitimate"? Can players win? What have Donald Trump, Caesar's Place, MGM, and Steve Wynn done with or about Indian Casinos? How is the money made and who gets it?What role do non-Indian entrepreneurs play in developing and operating these casinos? Is there organized crime? How are these casinos managed? Is there investment opportunity?Do the states have any recourse, control, or ability to tax?Do these casinos solve or provide retribution for the poverty, neargenocide, and abuse Native Americans have suffered since Europeans arrived?
The self-help and inspirational book The Mindful Lifestyle describes mindfulness practices in detail, with the idea that everyone can benefit by learning and practicing mindfulness meditation. Many examples and exercises are provided. While it is a small and concise book, it covers all aspects of mindfulness in an easy to understand way, and suggests that meditation can be more than a practice one does a few minutes a day. It can be a lifestyle choice. Gary Green grew up on a small dairy farm near New London, Minnesota, where he still lives. He worked much of his life in the mental health field and for 17 years was the director of a mental health residential treatment facility for mentally ill adults. He retired in 2013. "e;In Pursuit of Joy is one of the most compelling books I have read in the last ten years. Gary Green tells his own deeply moving story of a journey from depression and alcohol problems to a life of peace with himself and the world. Although this is one man's story, it applies to any of us who have ever felt alone with our problems, that we are unlovable in some way, and that there is no way out of the maze. Mr. Green shares the different paths that eventually led him out of his own maze, ranging from the philosophical to the psychological to the spiritual, never preaching, but always inviting people to find their own way to lead a richer, more joyful life. This book speaks directly to the heart of the matter and, uniquely, to the heart of the reader. If Mr. Green, a self-described 'regular guy,' can recover his life, maybe we all can."e; Susan Gingerich, co-author of The Illness Management and Recovery Program, The Complete Family Guide to Schizophrenia, Coping Skills Group, and Social Skills Training for Schizophrenia.
