Egbert Farthing is the new boy appearing to join the Wordsworth Academy in the last week of term. This does strike Robbie and Dylan as being a little odd. But more concerning is the boy's enormous size. Both think he is a potential target for bullying and agree to keep an eye out. Egbert soon becomes their friend at school at Robbie's home. Of course there is the inevitable hilarious fantasy with William and Scruffy, and this is where Egbert's true friendship and generosity comes through.
Lucy, eleven-year-old Robbie's sister, is about to celebrate her 15th Birthday. Single minded, as she usually appears, she wants a big party. Dad has said "NO" to hiring the local church hall, but agreed to using the house on the conditions of limiting the number of invited guests and worse, stipulated that Robbie is allowed to attend and invite a guest. From the start of the party day, in spite of the two appearing to co-operate, there are more than a few trifling problems. As party time looms, Mum and Dad, along with Auntie Sheila and Uncle Roger have barricaded themselves upstairs in the front bedroom with phone communication to Robbie. The usual suspects are in attendance, along with their weirdo neighbours' even odder son and daughter, and so the evening parties on, Mum could possibly be on the verge of a panic attack. Someone, somehow, needs to take control...
MEN IN BLACK is the third of six books in "The Fantasy World of Robbie Salvage" comedy series aimed at 10 to 13 year olds. Robbie is in his first year at "Big School" (book 1) and has befriended Dylan who, like himself, has joined Wordsworth Academy, not now knowing anyone (Robbie discounts Lucy, his 15 year old sister). Robbie loves Comic Book Hero stories, sometimes allowing his imagination to run away with the idea that he is, himself, some kind of comic book hero. So, along with Dylan, Robbie often involves William, his 8 year old cousin, in these adventures, not forgetting "Scruffy"(book 2), the latest addition to the Salvage household. Book 3 sees Robbie's imagination take off when he spots a group of men dressed all in black, and appearing to be just hanging around outside a row of boarded up shops. Could they be the real Men In Black? Robbie and his gang decide they need to investigate the mystery, and are joined on their quest by two friends from school, Abbie and Chloe.
For just about as long as Robbie Salvage can remember, the only thing he has ever really wanted is a pet dog.Dylan, his best friend, totally understands how Robbie feels, for exactly the same reason, but the two have come to the conclusion that, "A dog is never going to happen".So when a dog follows Robbie home from the park one afternoon, what on earth is he going to do with him? The only hope is to hide him in the shed then, first thing in the morning, take the dog back to the park. However, Robbie hadn't counted on the involvement of young cousin William and the dog escaping into the house and a room full of anti-dog grown-ups.As the comedy continues in this second book in The Fantasy World of Robbie Salvage series, the 11 year old struggles with how he will get himself out of yet another scrape, let alone how a senior member of the British Royal Family gets into the story.
Robbie is so involved with with his comics and their Hero characters that, perhaps, he feels he could be the Comic Book Hero with the purpose of putting right the wrongs he perceives... (to be completed)
