Am 4. Oktober 1903 erschoss sich zu Wien der dreiundzwanzigjährige Otto Weininger, Doktor der Philosophie. Von ihm stammen zwei Bücher: ¿Geschlecht und Charakter. Eine prinzipielle Untersuchung¿, das kurz vor seinem Tode erschien und ¿Über die letzten Dinge¿, das Ende 1903 von seinem Freunde Moriz Rappaport als Nachlass herausgegeben wurde, beide im Braumüllerschen Verlag zu Wien. Besonders ¿Geschlecht und Charakter¿, das eine Lösung der Frauenfrage in höherem Sinne darstellen sollte, hat allgemeines Aufsehen hervorgerufen; es hat eine Reihe von begeisterten Lobrednern gefunden; auch an lebhaftem und energischem Widerspruche hat es nicht gefehlt. Strindberg begrüsste z. B. das Buch mit den Worten: ¿Ein furchtbares Buch, das aber wahrscheinlich das schwerste aller Probleme gelöst hat¿ und ruft aus: ¿Ich buchstabierte, aberWeininger setzte zusammen. Voilà un homme!¿ Diesem ersten Werke wird ¿unheimliche Geschlossenheit und funkelnder Geist¿ nachgerühmt; die Resultate desselben wurden ¿betäubend, niederschmetternd¿ genannt. Die ¿Letzten Dinge¿ bezeichnete Nordhausen als das ¿köstliche Testament des dreiundzwanzigjährigen Grossen¿ und behauptete ¿reicher an Anregungen, an Blitzlichtern und kostbaren Goldfunden ist kein Buch unserer Tage.¿
