Publicado por primera vez en 1915, Cathay contenía catorce traducciones del chino y una traducción del poema anglosajón "The Seafarer". Fenollosa habría escrito en primer lugar una transcripción fonética (utilizando la pronunciación japonesa del chino, razón por la cual muchos de los nombres de los poetas fueron resultado de transliteraciones, como Rihaku en vez de Li Bai).
