Die Studie »Die Psychologie des Hochstaplers« von Erich Wulffen erschien erstmals 1923, in einer Zeit, als das Phänomen der Hochstapelei »grassierte«. Verheimlichung, Verstellung, Ausschmückungen und Übertreibungen sind nach Wulffens Darstellung überall in der menschlichen Gesellschaft zu finden, sie sind sogar Bestandteile des natürlichen Selbsterhaltungstriebs, der jedoch beim Hochstapler in falsche Bahnen gelenkt wurde.
