This book covers life in the City of Berlin between 1938 and 1989 as seen through the eyes of the youngest member of a Berlin family. It chronicles how ordinary Berliners survived not only the war but its aftermath and how they coped with the adversity, hunger and cold that came along with it. It is also the story of young Berliners who left home to find happiness on foreign shores. "Ich bin ein Berliner". Those were the famed words uttered by Pres. Kennedy on June 26, 1963. He spoke to people living behind a wall enclosing their City. What happens when people are forced to live in such an environment results in a gradual change in the temperament of the population from outgoing, exuberant survivors to short-tempered and unhappy individuals. And without humour, wit or self-depreciation - a Berliner is no longer a Berliner.
