An overweight, over-middle-aged murder witness is taken to a remote area of California to be killed. She escapes and finds her adventure is less about her physical survival than her emotional one.

The German Gestapo arrests a young American woman in 1939. She escapes and is able to make a life for herself by taking the overflow of wounded German soldiers into her home.

Despondent and running from the police, Jean, the young woman in the story, finds Mamie. The older Indian woman offers Jean shelter in the mountains. They combine old and new ways of living, gaining pride in their skills and achievements.

A white woman, chastised by her husband in front of the ranch hands, leaves to rescue an Indian woman wrongly being put to death by the chief. The women heal their wounds and fend for themselves escaping across the prairie.
