  • - The Extraordinary Life of Konrad Morgen
    av David Lee
    294,-

In the Third Reich, the SS ran the Gestapo, the police and the concentration camps where millions of people were killed. However Nazi Germany still had laws and a legal system which outlawed murder and other criminal acts and SS Investigating Judge and Police Official SS, Major Konrad Morgen, used these laws to investigate and bring individual members of the SS to justice for their crimes against innocent victims. He was a fearless judge and investigator, and when he crossed swords with more powerful forces inside the SS he was demoted and sent by the Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler himself to the Eastern Front as an ordinary soldier in the Waffen SS. But his investigative skills were still needed and he returned to launch a series of criminal investigations in concentration camps. As a direct result of his investigations two concentration camp commandants were shot before the end of the War and he arrested three others. This book describes the cases he investigated and how he was able to pursue some of Nazi Germany's worst murderers from inside the SS.

Charlie Reade appears to be a typical high school student who excels at baseball and football and is a respectable student. But he is carrying a big load. When he was ten years old, his mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and his father's grief led to alcoholism. Charlie picked up self-care skills while also teaching his father. When Charlie is seventeen years old, he meets Radar the dog and Howard Bowditch, an elderly recluse who lives alone in a sizable home at the top of a sizable hill with a closed shed in the backyard. Strange sounds occasionally emanate from it. Charlie begins working for Mr. Bowditch and falls in love with Radar. After that, Bowditch leaves Charlie a cassette tape on which he tells a story that no one would ever believe. In the shed, there is a portal to another planet, which Bowditch is aware of and has kept a secret his entire long existence. In Fairy Tale, King's narrative skills shine. A brave child, along with his dog, must lead the fight against overpowering evil in this stunning and horrifying story. What could you write during the Pandemic that would make you happy? King wondered himself early on. "I saw a sizable desolate metropolis that was alive but deserted, as if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be posed. I observed the deserted streets, the eerie structures, and a gargoyle head lying on its side in the roadway. I observed destroyed statues (of whatever I later learned). A massive, expansive mansion with glass towers whose tops pierced the clouds was what I saw. The story I sought to tell was made public by those pictures.

Acclaimed by many as Australia's greatest prime minister, John Curtin overcame alcoholism and a troubled relationship with the Scullin Labour Government to win the Labor leadership by one vote in October 1935. Rescuing the Labor Party from division and humiliating defeats in 1931 and 1934, he put it in a position to win in the years after 1937. A constructive wartime Leader of the Opposition, he engineered the creation of an Advisory War Council to help minority Coalition and Labor governments manage a divided House of Representatives. From October 1941 he steered his wartime Labor Government through perhaps the greatest strategic challenge that Australia has ever faced. In doing so, he led Labor to one of its most emphatic electoral victories in 1943 and put his party in a position to enshrine long-held aspirations such as national control of banking and provision for a welfare state. His death in July 1945 was met with a national outpouring of grief that underlined the extent to which Curtin had been recognised as a national leader above party. David Lee is Associate Professor in History, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of New South Wales, Canberra. He was General Editor of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Documents on Australian Foreign Policy series from 1997 to 2019. His publications include Australia and the World in the Twentieth Century (2005), Stanley Melbourne Bruce: Australian Internationalist (2010) and The Second Rush: Mining and the Transformation of Australia (2016).
