The city of Gdańsk resides on the Baltic coast in northern Poland. It is Poland's principal seaport, and with a population of 470,621, it is also Poland's fourth-largest metropolitan area. The city has a complex history with periods of Polish and German rule, and autonomy as the Free City of Dunzig. It has been an important shipbuilding and trade port since the Middle Ages. In 1361, becoming a member of the Hanseatic League would define its economic, demographic, and urban landscape. The years 1918 through 1939 saw Gdańsk lay in the disputed Polish Corridor, and its ambiguous political status created tensions that culminated in the Invasion of Poland and the first skirmish of the Second World War at Westerplatte. After 1945 the contemporary city was shaped by extensive border changes, expulsions, and new settlements. In the 1980s, Gdańsk witnessed the birth of the Solidarity movement which served to precipitate the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. Today, Gdańsk is the most visited city in Poland with 3.4 million tourists passing through each year (2019). The city constantly maintains top rankings for quality of life, safety, and living standards worldwide, and its historic city center has been listed as one of Poland's national monuments. In this collection, David Kent captures a series of spectacular images of the unique cityscapes, landscapes, and daily life of those of the Baltic city of Gdańsk in Poland, as well as a variety of images from Sopot, Warsaw, and Toruń. All images were taken at various times of the day, night, and year.

    av David Kent
    254,-

David Kent unlocked the files of Department Thirty in his electrifying debut novel, "a thrill-a-minute ride" (Mystery Scene). Now he returns to the elusive government agency that erases criminal identities in exchange for lethal secrets -- in a heart-pounding new thriller.Raised by his tough but loving distant cousin Colleen, Eric Anthony never cared or asked what became of the parents who abandoned him early in life. But now Colleen is dying, and Eric, single dad to his young deaf son, is left with a mind-boggling mystery revealed in Colleen's last breaths: a cryptic directive from the man who was his father. Piecing together his shadowed past begins in the dust of Oklahoma's rugged terrain -- and leads to Department Thirty, where U.S. Marshal Faith Kelly chases the mastermind behind a wave of domestic terror. The nexus where their solo quests meet will have explosive implications for them both -- and will place many more than just themselves in grave danger.

  • - Protest in Rural England, New Lives in Australia

    241,-

This book focuses on the men of the convict transport Eleanor who arrived in NSW in 1831. They were all from the counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire and were transported for their part in the Swing riots - the great agricultural uprising of 1830-31. This episode which touched thirty counties and has been called 'the last peasants' revolt' led to more than 480 people being sent to Australia ('the largest single group in the history of transportation' (George Rude). The men on the Eleanor who made up 30% of the Swing transportees. Part I of the book deals with the men of the Eleanor in their English setting, Part II with their experiences as convicts and free men in New South Wales. The chapter headings below give a clear indication of the contents of each chapter and the focus of the book on ruined and then reconstructed lives Written with full academic apparatus but with that elusive being the general reader in mind, this theme will appeal to that large readership in England which is interested in rural social history and popular protest. In Australia there is a large and enthusiatic readership for books on colonial history, convictism and works which provide a context for family history. This book also has the advantage of being focussed on Hardy's Wessex and is thus, to some extent, a contribution to the regional history of southern England. The Swing Riots are a topic which features in the history syllabuses of most examination boards in southern England.
