The phrase "Rhythm and Blues," often abbreviated to "R&B," emerged during the 1940s as a replacement for the term "race music," and served as a broader marketing term describing African American music. R&B became one of the major constituents of rock and roll, along with jazz and country. During the latter part of the 1950s, this led to doo-wop and in the 1960s soul music as made commercially popular by record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax.In 1942, Billboard began the publication of a chart showcasing the best-selling African-American music, initially known as the Harlem Hit Parade, later rebranded as the Race Records chart. By 1949, Billboard introduced the Rhythm and Blues chart, popularising the abbreviation "R&B" within the mainstream music vocabulary. These distinct charts were merged into a unified Hot R&B Singles chart in October 1958.Between November 30, 1963, and January 23, 1965, Billboard suspended the R&B singles charts due to significant overlap between R&B and pop charts, particularly with the emergence of Motown. The chart was resurrected as Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles on January 30, 1965.On August 23, 1969, the term "rhythm and blues" was superseded by "soul," prompting a rebranding of the chart to Best Selling Soul Singles. Billboard justified this change, stating that "soul" better encapsulated the diverse musical output originating from African-American culture. Subsequently, in late June 1982, the chart underwent another name change, becoming Hot Black Singles, reflecting the evolving stylistic landscape of music embraced by African-American audiences, which now encompassed pop, funk, and early rap. This book covers the R&B charts from Billboard and Cash Box during the period from 1942 to 1989.

Our previous books have chronicled every hit from the first chart in July 1940 to the last one of the 1980s. These were the top 20s, top 30s and top 100s of this classic period of music. From June 1959, Billboard magazine began to list up and coming records that were outside of the Hot 100 each week. This section of the chart was called 'Bubbling Under'. In October 1959, Cash Box magazine began a similar listing which they called 'Looking Ahead'. The purpose of these additional chart placings was to show which records were gaining airplay and starting to sell in the shops with the expectation that some of them would become big hits. Many of the records that appeared on the 'Bubbling Under' and 'Looking Ahead' charts never made the top 100 and for many years have been forgotten and disregarded. These records are listed in this new book showing the date they entered the 'Bubbling Under' and 'Looking Ahead' lists and the highest chart position (outside of the top 100) that each one achieved. Billboard discontinued their 'Bubbling Under' charts in August 1985 while Cash Box continued with their additional chart placings until February 1993.

A much loved and well-remembered pastime was lying in bed late at night with a radio under the bedclothes, listening to the most famous radio station in Europe - The English service of Radio Luxembourg. Founded in 1933, Luxy, as the station was affectionately known, broadcast entertainment and popular music to a continent that was poorly served in that regard by their national broadcasters. In Great Britain, millions of people listened to the Top Twenty Show which began in October 1948 and was Europe's very first regular popular music chart countdown. The programme evolved over the years. Between 1948 and December 1959 the chart was based on the sheet music sales listing compiled by the Music Publishers Association. From January 1960 the New Musical Express record charts were used and later in the decade, Luxy compiled their own chart in-house based on airplay. In the spring of 1971, Radio Luxembourg's chart became a prediction chart updated every Tuesday evening and aimed to be ahead of BBC Radio One's chart. Luxembourg's management analysed the BBC chart's movements and exaggerated them to predict their own chart for the following week. This approach aimed to create an exciting and forward-looking chart. This method of compiling the hit parade continued throughout the seventies and eighties and up to the fateful week in December 1991 when Radio Luxembourg ceased transmissions on the famous 208 meter medium wave signal. The station continued for a further twelve months, broadcasting to Europe via the Astra satellite system until it closed finally in December 1992.
