This is an analysis of the Chicago Historical Society's evolving relationship with its constituencies since its founding and a comparison of its development over four decades with that of other American museums and historic sites.

Mass incarceration and lower crime rates have not made city dwellers feel safe. Programmes designed to deal with this problem focus on increased police protection. In this study, Lewis and Salem question the validity of these assumptions and the effectiveness of this approach.
