The changing concept of "virtue" during the 18th century is followed here, from the Roman ideals of personal integrity which was lacking in the political corruption of the time, to the idea of virtue prevailing only in the unpoliticized, to the questioning of the very concept of "virtue" itself.

This study of Victorian literature and culture begins with the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 to her proclamation as Empress of India in 1877. It is a time of growing national self-confidence and of industrial, scientific and literary achievements, yet also an age marked by uncertainty.
