This popular 19th-century Bible study book has become a classic for Roman Catholics. It was originally composed by bishop Friedrich Justus Knecht (1839-1921). The book had 16 editions and was initially recommended by 14 bishops when first published. The tone is more instructional, focusing on the history and culture of the stories in the Bible and offering a moral commentary lesson at the end. This second volume focuses on the New Testament, offering lessons and commentary on a selection of the most famous stories from Matthew through the Acts of Apostles. The source text for this work is: "A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture for the use of those who teach Bible history, London, B. Herder, 1910," by Friedrich Justus Knecht (1839-1921) and Rev. Michael Francis Glancey (1854 - 1925). This text has been augmented with artwork, mostly from the renaissance period, of the Biblical stories mentioned in the text.

Pastors and church leaders struggle with issues of conflict that come suddenly like a storm. If not handled prayerfully and quickly, members disagree, argue, grow angry and ultimately may leave the church, taking anger with them to the next pastor and congregation. Which could be you. It is not "if" but "when" the storm clouds will gather that speaks to the impact and reality of church conflict. The pastor and leadership must be prepared to deal with church conflict immediately. The author believes that it is a great biblical misunderstanding that allows many pastors and congregations to to regard church conflict as something to be avoided like the plagues of Egypt. Instead, church pastors and leadership must see conflict is inevitable and a normal part of congregational life. Seen in this way, biblical healing and spirit led training, can become part of a healthy transformative process, strengthening pastors and congregations. Church leaders must stop running from conflict and stand fast with prayerful teaching and training plus quick engagement with all parties. Peace begins with accepting conflict as an opportunity to move the church congregation closer to God and to each other. Since our churches are comprised of all kinds of people, our approach to conflict interventions must be based on the needs of all of the people in our congregations and also on the fact that as our brothers and sisters, we love them all in the spirit of Christ. Today's pastors and church leaders must remember that effective leadership in turbulent times requires prayer, training and confidence in the grace and peace of Jesus Christ, the only one who has the power to still storms and heal churches.

  • - A Commentary on the History and Contents of the Alexandrian Old Testament; its Literary Use and Influence on Scholars and Translators of the Bible
    av D D
    232,-

This Bible commentary concerns the Greek versions of the Old Testament, its literary and scholarly qualities, and use as a source for later, English translations of the Biblical text.A study rich in profundity and the author's decisive scholarship, we find within this book a thorough, chapter-by-chapter comparison of the earliest versions of the Bible in Greek. The order and composition of the verses were arranged with the vocabulary differences placed into charts, that the reader may understand all with clarity.Much of Swete's thesis is concerned with the differences between the Alexandrian Old Testament and the Septuagint (commonly referred to as the LXX) - the earliest known iteration of the Bible in Greek. These two versions of the Old Testament differ in certain ways, and it is these divergences which allow for Swete's most detailed commentary. The latter portions of this work concern the subsequent use of the Hellenic Bible in later literature. Quotation was popular, with fragments appearing in various works of antiquity, in the New Testament, and in later, Medieval scholarship. Swete investigates with his usual consistency the various quotes and their context, demonstrating how the Greek Old Testament held great sway with Christians through the ages.Henry Barclay Swete was a Bible scholar who authored multiple commentaries concerning scripture. Working in Cambridge University, he was influential among theologians and would also act as an editor for several published editions of essays.
