Clara Zetkin (1857-1933) speelde decennialang een vooraanstaande rol in de arbeidersbeweging. Ze sprak op de eerste bijeenkomst van de Tweede Internationale in 1889 over vrouwenrechten. Ze zette de toon binnen de Duitse socialistische beweging en binnen de internationale. Haar inspanningen om de rechten van vrouwen op de agenda te zetten, leidden in 1910 tot de vestiging van de internationale vrouwendag als dag van strijd. Ze lag aan de basis van de traditie van 8 maart. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog was Zetkin één van die weinige revolutionaire socialisten die zich verzette tegen imperialisme en oorlog. Ze nam het initiatief voor de eerste internationale anti-oorlogsconferentie in 1915. Na de oorlog was Zetkin enthousiast over de Russische Revolutie en de poging van de Bolsjewieken om een andere samenleving op te bouwen. Zetkin engageerde zich in de Derde Internationale. Binnen die Derde Internationale werkte Zetkin in 1923 de eerste communistische analyses over het fascisme uit. Ze bleef haar hele leven pleiten voor een eenheidsfront tegen het fascisme. In 1932 werd ze vanop haar ziekbed naar Berlijn gebracht om als oudste verkozene het parlement, waarin een groot aantal nazi's verkozen waren, te openen. Zetkin greep de gelegenheid aan om haar pleidooi voor een eenheidsfront tegen het fascisme te herhalen. Met deze uitgave willen we lezers kennis laten maken met één van de scherpste en opmerkelijkste revolutionairen uit de marxistische traditie.

Clara Zetkin, geborene Eißner (1857-1933) war eine sozialistische deutsche Politikerin, Friedensaktivistin und Frauenrechtlerin.
