In many ways the history of civilization is a history of our relationship with nature and landscape. Drawing on all aspects of mankind's creativity and ingenuity, and bringing together the key stories that have shaped our man-made landscapes, this title sets out to chronicle this intimate connection.

The articulation of transitional space forms a key element in Japanese architecture and its relationship to landscape. Climate and cultural history have shaped myriad forms and expressions of these spaces, which connect as well as separate. We pass through or dwell within them; these transitional spaces differentiate between one space and another, inside and outside, public and private, our body and what surrounds it.This issue of Pamphlet documents a conversation about six residential houses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. The houses and their surroundings were captured through sound recordings and Point Cloud laser scanning, the results of which were processed into short videos. Based on this material, architects, researchers, artists, and landscape architects from Japan and Europe discuss different modes of perceiving and representing transitional space in architecture and social interchanges, religion, and customs.

Auf vielfältige Art und Weise ist die Geschichte der Zivilisation eine Geschichte der Beziehung der Menschen zur Natur. Angefangen beim gegensätzlichen Umgang mit Land - einerseits Raum gewinnend für den Ackerbau, andererseits Land gestaltend um Raum zum Schutz abzugrenzen - hat Christophe Girot sich auf den Weg gemacht, diese Entwicklung aufzuzeichnen: Lebendig und facettenreich erzählt er von unserer kulturellen Verbindung zu aber auch unserer Abhängigkeit von der Landschaft. In zwölf Kapiteln trägt er die Schlüsselereignisse zusammen, die unsere menschengemachte Landschaft geformt haben.Dabei fokussiert jedes Kapitel auf ein bestimmtes Thema und beschreibt neben den relevanten Entwicklungen ein Projektbeispiel: Mit speziell angefertigten Fotografien und 3D-Gestaltungen wird der entsprechende Ort in seinem ursprünglichen Kontext nachvollziehbar. Die Vielzahl an kulturellen Bezugspunkten und die Besonderheiten der hier vorgestellten Landschaften sensibilisiert unser Verständnis dafür, wie wir unsere Umwelt geformt haben und in welcher Beziehung wir zu ihr stehen.
