Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by the three ghosts of Christmas. They show him the joy of Christmas, and wretchedness of his own legacy. Inspired and chastened by what he has seen, Scrooge resolves to change and from then on embraces and promotes the true spirit of Christmas.

Charles Dickens (1812-70) was an established novelist when he wrote the most famous Christmas story in English literature in only six weeks. This reissue of the first edition allows readers to enjoy the story as Dickens had intended, and as its first readers experienced it during Christmas 1843.

The first book edition of Great Expectations was published in three volumes in 1861. It is now reissued simultaneously with the serialised version of 1860-1 and a newly photographed colour reproduction of the original manuscript, enabling scholars and enthusiasts to study the book version alongside the work-in-progress.
