Fra i cento e più critici che tartassarono la mia teoria sul Genio, uno solo mi ha segnalata una vera, capitale lacuna: il Sergi: quando mi obbietta, nel Monist, che io ho sì illustrata e, forse, rivelata, la natura del genio; ma non ho spiegato come sorgano le varietà così differenti dei genî. Non già - egli intendeva - che i genî differiscano essenzialmente fra loro per qualità. L'eccellere nella pittura piuttosto che nella matematica o nella strategia, non cambia punto la natura dei genî; come il variare nel sistema di cristallizzazione romboedrica o esaedrica non cambia la natura chimica del carbonato calcare, essendo in tutti comune l'esplosione, l'intermittenza, la creazione del nov...

Come ho già accennato poco sopra, mal potrebbe il lettore profano agli studi di psichiatria, afferrare quanto io tenterò di esporre nei seguenti Capitoli, se prima non si persuade essere non già una bizzaria che mi pulluli in capo, ma un fatto, ormai nettamente risoluto dalla scienza, che, salvo negli idioti, negli imbecilli e nei dementi che hanno servito sventuratamente a modello pei più, l'intelligenza della maggior parte dei pazzi è piuttosto in una esagerata che non deficiente attività; se e' sbagliano, sbagliano perchè troppo sentono e pensano, e quindi sono in un contrasto continuo coi loro coetanei e fino col loro stesso passato...
