"Now is the winter of our discontentMade glorious summer by this sun of York; And all the clouds that lour'd upon our houseIn the deep bosom of the ocean buried." --William Shakespeare, Richard III These words opened the play Richard III and those feelings of discontent were no less a universal experience then than now. People yearn for more and they don't always find the best ways to go about it. Sometimes folks are hurt in the process and they're looked at as nothing but collateral damage. Sometimes no one gets hurt, but our yearning to content ourselves is overriding. The stories in this book look to that wintery discontent for inspiration, telling all manner of stories. From political dissent to personal tragedy, each story in this book was crafted with care and empathy for the discontent we all face. "The artist in our time has two chief responsibilities: (1) art; and (2) sedition."- Edward AbbeyWhether or not an artist intends to do so when creating their work, art-and especially writing-has a profound impact on our history, our communities, and our trajectory as a society. Writers have played a critical role in pushing back against tyranny and authoritarianism through poetry, newspapers, songs, firsthand narratives, and even fiction. Put simply, writing can change the world. While some change is on a grand scale, other change is more personal, impacting the direction of one life at a time for better or for worse. The poems and stories in Art & Sedition explore the sparks ignited by art and artists in fictional worlds, the here and now, and possible futures that feel all too near.Featuring New York Times bestselling author Michael A. StackpoleWith fiction and poetry by C.W. Allen, Bradley S. Blanchard, Abby Feenstra, Alexis Hansen, C.R. Langille, Brooke J Losee, J.L. This first monograph from New York-based Young Projects explores a new approach to spatial design that combines digital and analog methods at the intersection of exploration and architecture. This monograph introduces the cutting-edge research and work of Young Projects, founded by Bryan Young, where materiality, structure, and form intersect to generate new architectural typologies. The book presents a selection of the practice's most relevant projects: five innovative houses completed between 2015 and 2020 as well as less in-depth looks at other projects that define the practice. Each house serves as a chapter through which Young Projects' broader body of work is explored across scales, illustrated through a rich landscape of drawings, diagrams, renderings, mock-ups, prototypes, and photography. The through-line connecting all chapters is the studio's interest in using ambiguity and anomaly to create novel and accessible spaces, whether for high profile clients like Heidi Klum or a new resort in St Kitts. Young Projects seeks to draw users into immersive spatial experiences that unfold over time, in a manner that is familiar but subtly foreign. This quality of "allure" is a result of a unique and experimental approach to materiality and spatial legibility. These are the threads that tie the work together and have set Young Projects apart as an emerging practice, as well as inform the larger-scale projects the studio undertakes as it enters its second decade. Young Projects' process often begins with simple exercises in making: form-finding experiments they undertake within their Brooklyn studio. Material research has included hand-pulling plaster with an irregular knife, using furniture foam as a casting bed, and forming concrete with palm stems. These experiments, among many others, mine characteristics that are not typically associated with conventional architectural materials and break traditional methodology, allowing for qualities of randomness and spontaneity to enter the process of making. The studio finds that letting go of control (at the right moments) produces results that are often surprising, entirely bespoke, and resist replication.
A TEST OF LOYALTY... Clan Jade Falcon's war efforts draw closer to Terra, but to conquer this ultimate prize, the Falcons' vicious Khan, Malvina Hazen, must be able to trust all of her warriors to carry out her commands without hesitation-no matter how much death or collateral damage they will cause. For Malvina, victory is the only thing that matters, and those who stand in her way suffer swift and brutal elimination. Star Captain Archer Pryde is an unconventional Falcon MechWarrior who chafes at carrying out his Khan's terror tactics, but he delivers results in combat, so Malvina has turned a blind eye to his beliefs so far. But when civilians on a conquered world revolt against their Clan masters, innocents are caught in the Falcons' crosshairs. Archer and his fellow MechWarriors must prove their mettle to Star Colonel Nikita Malthus, the Khan's vindictive advisor, by carrying out their scorched-earth orders to the letter. But are these orders a betrayal of what it means to be a true and honorable Jade Falcon? With both his loyalty and honor in question, Archer must run the gauntlet between duty and principles, or risk his own destruction...
