There is a rich history of achievements by Chartered Surveyors in Singapore going back as far as the 1880s. Their stories have largely gone untold. This book tells the stories of individual Chartered Surveyors in Singapore over the first hundred years since the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors was founded (1868 to 1968) and explains the role they played in the development of Singapore. The book also includes the stories of the pioneer Singaporean Chartered Surveyors from the 1940s onwards, many of whom studied overseas but returned to Singapore where they would play important roles in the real estate industry over future decades.

Nikola Tesla, inventor of alternating current motors, did the basic research for constructing electromagnetic field lift-and-drive aircraft/space craft. From 1891 to 1893, he gave a set of lectures and demonstrations to groups of electrical engineers. As part of each show, Tesla stood in the middle of the stage, using his 6' 6" height, with an assistant on either side, each 7 feet away. All 3 men wore thick cork or rubber shoe soles to avoid being electrically grounded. Each assistant held a wire, part of a high voltage, low current circuit. When Tesla raised his arms to each side, violet colored electricity jumped harmlessly across the gaps between the men. At high voltage and frequency in this arrangement, electricity flows over a surface, even the skin, rather than into it. This is a basic circuit which could be used by aircraft / spacecraft.

This introduction to the life and work of Bert Coombes should be valuable not just for its assessment of Coombes, but for the light that it sheds on the social and industrial context in which he lived. His writing articulated the social and economic injustice of contemporary capitalism.

Our young and earnest hero, Algernon Swift, returns from his travels abroad and must once more face the trials of life, love and the English language. Back at home, Algernon tries to cope with the exorbitant passion of the exquisite Mavis (a woman with X on her mind) and his elderly uncle, Reverend Hawker, and his exasperating inability to mean one thing at a time. Well-meaning in a world of double meanings, can Algernon avoid becoming another of Mavis's Xs or, at least, plunging into an existential crisis of his own? Amidst perpetual solicitude, can Algernon find both solace and solitude? Punning on subjects as diverse as Henry VIII's wives, Pre-Raphaelite painters, mathematics and fairy tales, we are taken on a hilarious and punishing journey of jokes - both high-brow and homespun - as Algernon attempts to make sense of, and even delight in, the world of word-play. Written and illustrated by Bill Jones, The Life and Times of Algernon Swift contains some of the best - or indeed worst - puns and jokes you will ever read.
