"I learned at the age of four that the reason for rising early in the morning before the sun rose was to go to the cucumber field in my bare feet to pick the cucumbers while the vines were still wet with the morning dew."Such was the life of Bernette Majette Windom, growing up on a large farm in eastern North Carolina. Her parents were of mixed races: Native American, white, black, and Irish. She experienced some discrimination, particularly in her childhood, when she and her siblings had to walk to their elementary school while the white kids rode the school bus.A series of providential events landed Bernette at Oakwood College, where she soaked up Bible truths like a sponge. While working at a hospital in Detroit, Michigan, she met and married Bill Windom. They raised five children and took care of Bill's parents in their declining years.Through triumphs and tragedies, Bernette never lost her faith in God or her enthusiasm for sharing her faith with others. As you follow her through her busy life, you'll be encouraged to find the special place that God has for you and work for Him wherever He puts you.
