Camus første roman, "Den fremmede", gir uttrykk for den fornemmelse av meningsløshet og fremmedfølelse som det i de senere verker gjelder å erkjenne til bunns og å overvinne. "Myten om Sisyfos" gir i essayform en slags forklaring og filosofisk kommentar til denne romanen. Absurditeten kan bare være et uunngåelig utgangspunkt, og det er nettopp det absurde Camus skriver om her.
