Dette julealbumet inneholder selvsagt ikke alle historiene fra 70-tallets elskede «kjempebok», men har funnet plass til et kresent utvalg. Alle de lange eventyrene «Det gamle slottets hemmelighet», «Gøy i Alaska» og «Fantomet i Notre Duck» er klassikere, og selvsagt forfattet og tegnet av Disney-nestoren Carl Barks.

Årets utgave av Carl Barks jul starter med klassikeren «Julereisen», der Donald og nevøene atter en gang må stille opp for å hjelpe sin søkkrike slektning som vil øke sin rikdom. Som vanlig er deres innsats dårlig betalt. Men det er jul, og til en forandring viser onkel Skrue en sjelden myk side slik at det allikevel blir jul som den skal være. Den andre lengre historien i heftet er faktisk en liten raritet. «Du gylne glitrende tre», som ble tegnet i 1948, kom ikke i norsk språkdrakt før i 1986. Carl Barks sto ikke helt alene bak den historien. Redaktørene som utga Disneys tegneserier i USA, ga tegneren en idéskisse til en fortelling som inneholdt den tradisjonelle Disney-heksa. Og ikke bare treffer vi igjen samme heksa som forgiftet Snehvit – i teksten blir faktisk Disney-filmen Snehvit omtalt i klartekst. Det er uhyre sjeldent at man finner slike interne meldinger i Disney-tegneseriene. Men historien bærer tydelig preg av Barks og hans forteller-glede.
