"Every day-no matter how bleak it seems-find one good thing for which to be thankful." Through a series of unsent letters to the sweetheart he left behind, Jack Calhoun unpacks his rage and grief and wrestles with questions of the soul like, "Who am I?" Rachael Burns, the girl he left, uses her journal to make sense of his abandonment. Jack escapes the guilt-filled confines of judgmental Bellum, Georgia, and embarks on a rocky path toward purpose. When that mission gets shattered on a dark street in Fallujah, he's left empty-handed. Rachael clings to thrills and busyness that never heal her heart. She faces her deepest fears and misbeliefs and must cast pride aside for something greater than her emotions. As their parallel journeys lead toward mountaintops miles apart, Jack and Rachael receive the gift of a truth powerful enough to change their lives forever. In a world where tomorrow isn't promised and tragedies rend lives, who a person is at the core is the only thing that can be unchanging ... if that identity rests in an absolute source. Fans of Where the Crawdads Sing, hope-filled coming-of-age dramas and post-9/11 fiction will enjoy this dual-POV epistolary novel, which embodies Southern fiction with Christian roots.

The book's audience will be anyone that appreciates a swiftly moving novella containing Aussie humour and the nuances therein. Wacky characters abound in this fictional 1920s village, Mungonana and its surrounding districts. It will appeal to readers who can identify with the characters' less outrageous behaviour and no doubt, to some who can identify with the outrageous stuff. Having indigenous content, the story should meet with their approval. There are numerous fantasy animals in the mix. These will draw in younger adults and intrigue others from the above groups. The main character is a 6 feet 4 inches, 16 stone blonde lady who is, at the age of 20, the uncompromising and undisputed leader of Mungonana. She has scant regard for the male sex, however, near the end of the story we find a subtle change has occurred.

In the latter part of 1939, German leader Adolf Hitler made a pact with the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to invade Poland. Confident that British and French leaders would opt for a weak peace settlement, Hitler's army stormed in from the north, south and west on September 1st, while Stalin's Red Army invaded from the east on September 17th. This story, part fact and part fiction, is an account of the suffering endured by the Polish people at this time, many of whom were imprisoned in Siberia and forced to work under dreadful conditions. Yet when Hitler turned on Stalin and invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Poland's exiled found common cause with their Russian captors to take up arms against Nazi oppression. Though the Allies emerged victorious in 1945, a heavy price was exacted from occupied Poland. Many survivors discovered they no longer had homeland to which they could return, their former communities now under firm Soviet control.

In her first novel since Insurrecto, Gina Apostol assembles a vision of Philippine history from the 19th century to present day in the fragmented story of the Delgados, a family surviving across generations of colonization, catastrophe, and war.Rosario, a Filipina novelist in New York City, has just learned of her mother’s death in the Philippines. Instead of rushing home, she puts off her return by embarking on a remote investigation into her family’s history and her mother’s supposed inheritance, a place called La Tercera, which may or may not exist. Rosario catalogs generations of Delgado family bequests and detritus: maps of uncertain purpose, rusted chicken coops, a secret journal, the words to songs sung at the family home during visits from Imelda Marcos. Each life Rosario explores opens onto an array of other lives and raises a multitude of new questions. But as the search for La Tercera becomes increasingly labyrinthine, Rosario’s mother and the entire Delgado family emerge in all their dizzying complexity: traitors and heroes, reactionaries and revolutionaries. Meanwhile, another narrative takes shape—of the country’s erased history of exploitation and slaughter at the hands of American occupying forces.La Tercera is Gina Apostol’s most ambitious, personal, and encompassing novel: a story about what seems impossible—capturing the truth of the past—and the terrible cost to a family, or a country, that fails to try.

  • av Wilkie Collins
    258 - 458

Man and Wife was Wilkie Collins's ninth published novel. It is the second of his novels (after No Name) in which social questions provide the main impetus of the plot. Collins increasingly used his novels to explore social abuses, which according to critics tends to detract from their qualities as fiction. The social issue which drives the plot is the state of Scots marriage law; at the time the novel was written, any couple who were legally entitled to marry and who asserted that they were married, either before witnesses or in writing, were regarded in Scotland as being legally married. The novel, the next in sequence after Collins's highly successful The Moonstone, was a commercial success. Among modern critics, Peters holds a low opinion of its plot and characterisation, but Page argues that it should be classed with Collins's acclaimed 1860s fiction rather than with his later, and inferior, polemical novels. The novel has proved enduringly popular and remains in print. (wikipedia.org)
