This book develops limit theorems for a natural class of long range random walks on finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups. The limits in these limit theorems are Lévy processes on some simply connected nilpotent Lie groups. Both the limit Lévy process and the limit Lie group carrying this process are determined by and depend on the law of the original random walk. The book offers the first systematic study of such limit theorems involving stable-like random walks and stable limit Lévy processes in the context of (non-commutative) nilpotent groups.

This brief presents a global perspective on the geometry of spaces of polynomials. Its particular focus is on polynomial spaces of dimension 3, providing, in that case, a graphical representation of the unit ball. Also, the extreme points in the unit ball of several polynomial spaces are characterized. Finally, a number of applications to obtain sharp classical polynomial inequalities are presented. The study performed is the first ever complete account on the geometry of the unit ball of polynomial spaces. Nowadays there are hundreds of research papers on this topic and our work gathers the state of the art of the main and/or relevant results up to now. This book is intended for a broad audience, including undergraduate and graduate students, junior and senior researchers and it also serves as a source book for consultation. In addition to that, we made this work visually attractive by including in it over 50 original figures in order to help in the understanding of allthe results and techniques included in the book.

This brief research monograph uses modern mathematical methods to investigate partial differential equations with nonlinear convolution terms, enabling readers to understand the concept of a solution and its asymptotic behavior. In their full generality, these inequalities display a non-local structure. Classical methods, such as maximum principle or sub- and super-solution methods, do not apply to this context. This work discusses partial differential inequalities (instead of differential equations) for which there is no variational setting. This current work brings forward other methods that prove to be useful in understanding the concept of a solution and its asymptotic behavior related to partial differential inequalities with nonlinear convolution terms. It promotes and illustrates the use of a priori estimates, Harnack inequalities, and integral representation of solutions. One of the first monographs on this rapidly expanding field, the presentwork appeals to graduate and postgraduate students as well as to researchers in the field of partial differential equations and nonlinear analysis.

This volume is devoted to the study of hyperbolic free boundary problems possessing variational structure. Such problems can be used to model, among others, oscillatory motion of a droplet on a surface or bouncing of an elastic body against a rigid obstacle. In the case of the droplet, for example, the membrane surrounding the fluid in general forms a positive contact angle with the obstacle, and therefore the second derivative is only a measure at the contact free boundary set. We will show how to derive the mathematical problem for a few physical systems starting from the action functional, discuss the mathematical theory, and introduce methods for its numerical solution. The mathematical theory and numerical methods depart from the classical approaches in that they are based on semi-discretization in time, which facilitates the application of the modern theory of calculus of variations.

The focus of this book is on the further development of the classical achievements in analysis of several complex variables, the analytic continuation and the analytic structure of sets, to settings in which the  q-pseudoconvexity in the sense of Rothstein and the q-convexity in the sense of Grauert play a crucial role. After giving a brief survey of notions of generalized convexity and their most important results, the authors present recent statements on analytic continuation related to them. Rothstein (1955) first introduced q-pseudoconvexity using generalized Hartogs figures. SA odkowski (1986) defined q-pseudoconvex sets by means of the existence of exhaustion functions which are q-plurisubharmonic in the sense of Hunt and Murray (1978). Examples of q-pseudoconvex sets appear as complements of  analytic sets. Here, the relation of the analytic structure of graphs of continuous surfaces whose complements are q-pseudoconvex is investigated. As an outcome, the authors generalize results by Hartogs (1909), Shcherbina (1993), and Chirka (2001) on the existence of foliations of pseudoconcave continuous real hypersurfaces by smooth complex ones. A similar generalization is obtained by a completely different approach using Lmethods in the setting of q-convex spaces. The notion of q-convexity was developed by Rothstein (1955) and Grauert (1959) and extended to q-convex spaces by Andreotti and Grauert (1962). Andreotti-Grauert's finiteness theorem was applied by Andreotti and Norguet (1966-1971) to extend Grauert's solution of the Levi problem to q-convex spaces. A consequence is that the sets of (q-1)-cycles of q-convex domains with smooth boundaries in projective algebraic manifolds, which are equipped with complex structures as open subsets of Chow varieties, are in fact holomorphically convex. Complements of analytic curves are studied, and the relation of q-convexity and cycle spaces is explained. Finally, results for q-convex domains in projective spaces are shown and the q-convexity in analytic families is investigated.

This book focuses on linear time eigenvalue location algorithms for graphs. This subject relates to spectral graph theory, a field that combines tools and concepts of linear algebra and combinatorics, with applications ranging from image processing and data analysis to molecular descriptors and random walks. It has attracted a lot of attention and has since emerged as an area on its own.Studies in spectral graph theory seek to determine properties of a graph through matrices associated with it. It turns out that eigenvalues and eigenvectors have surprisingly many connections with the structure of a graph. This book approaches this subject under the perspective of eigenvalue location algorithms. These are algorithms that, given a symmetric graph matrix M and a real interval I, return the number of eigenvalues of M that lie in I. Since the algorithms described here are typically very fast, they allow one to quickly approximate the value of any eigenvalue, which is a basic step in most applications of spectral graph theory. Moreover, these algorithms are convenient theoretical tools for proving bounds on eigenvalues and their multiplicities, which was quite useful to solve longstanding open problems in the area. This book brings these algorithms together, revealing how similar they are in spirit, and presents some of their main applications. This work can be of special interest to graduate students and researchers in spectral graph theory, and to any mathematician who wishes to know more about eigenvalues associated with graphs. It can also serve as a compact textbook for short courses on the topic.

This book offers a structured algebraic and geometric approach to the classification and construction of quantum codes for topological quantum computation. It combines key concepts in linear algebra, algebraic topology, hyperbolic geometry, group theory, quantum mechanics, and classical and quantum coding theory to help readers understand and develop quantum codes for topological quantum computation. One possible approach to building a quantum computer is based on surface codes, operated as stabilizer codes. The surface codes evolved from Kitaev's toric codes, as a means to developing models for topological order by using qubits distributed on the surface of a toroid. A significant advantage of surface codes is their relative tolerance to local errors. A second approach is based on color codes, which are topological stabilizer codes defined on a tessellation with geometrically local stabilizer generators. This book provides basic geometric concepts, like surface geometry, hyperbolic geometry and tessellation, as well as basic algebraic concepts, like stabilizer formalism, for the construction of the most promising classes of quantum error-correcting codes such as surfaces codes and color codes. The book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics with an understanding of the basic concepts of linear algebra and quantum mechanics.

This book provides a comprehensive survey of the Sharkovsky ordering, its different aspects and its role in dynamical systems theory and applications. It addresses the coexistence of cycles for continuous interval maps and one-dimensional spaces, combinatorial dynamics on the interval and multidimensional dynamical systems. Also featured is a short chapter of personal remarks by O.M. Sharkovsky on the history of the Sharkovsky ordering, the discovery of which almost 60 years ago led to the inception of combinatorial dynamics. Now one of cornerstones of dynamics, bifurcation theory and chaos theory, the Sharkovsky ordering is an important tool for the investigation of dynamical processes in nature. Assuming only a basic mathematical background, the book will appeal to students, researchers and anyone who is interested in the subject.

This book introduces the theory of enveloping semigroups¿an important tool in the field of topological dynamics¿introduced by Robert Ellis. The book deals with the basic theory of topological dynamics and touches on the advanced concepts of the dynamics of induced systems and their enveloping semigroups. All the chapters in the book are well organized and systematically dealing with introductory topics through advanced research topics. The basic concepts give the motivation to begin with, then the theory, and finally the new research-oriented topics. The results are presented with detailed proof, plenty of examples and several open questions are put forward to motivate for future research. Some of the results, related to the enveloping semigroup, are new to the existing literature. The enveloping semigroups of the induced systems is considered for the first time in the literature, and some new results are obtained. The book has a research-oriented flavour in the field of topological dynamics.

This book aims the optimal design of a material (thermic or electrical) obtained as the mixture of a finite number of original materials, not necessarily isotropic. The problem is to place these materials in such a way that the solution of the corresponding state equation minimizes a certain functional that can depend nonlinearly on the gradient of the state function. This is the main novelty in the book.It is well known that this type of problems has no solution in general and therefore that it is needed to work with a relaxed formulation. The main results in the book refer to how to obtain such formulation, the optimality conditions, and the numerical computation of the solutions. In the case of functionals that do not depend on the gradient of the state equation, it is known that a relaxed formulation consists of replacing the original materials with more general materials obtained via homogenization. This includes materials with different properties of the originals but whose behavior can be approximated by microscopic mixtures of them. In the case of a cost functional depending nonlinearly on the gradient, it is also necessary to extend the cost functional to the set of these more general materials. In general, we do not dispose of an explicit representation, and then, to numerically solve the problem, it is necessary to design strategies that allow the functional to be replaced by upper or lower approximations. The book is divided in four chapters. The first is devoted to recalling some classical results related to the homogenization of a sequence of linear elliptic partial differential problems. In the second one, we define the control problem that we are mainly interested in solving in the book. We obtain a relaxed formulation and their main properties, including an explicit representation of the new cost functional, at least in the boundary of its domain. In the third chapter, we study the optimality conditions of the relaxed problem, and we describe some algorithms to numerically solve the problem. We also provide some numerical experiments carried out using such algorithms. Finally, the fourth chapter is devoted to briefly describe some extensions of the results obtained in Chapters 2 and 3 to the case of dealing with several state equations and the case of evolutive problems. The problems covered in the book are interesting for mathematicians and engineers whose work is related to mathematical modeling and the numerical resolution of optimal design problems in material sciences. The contents extend some previous results obtained by the author in collaboration with other colleagues.

The classical Lojasiewicz gradient inequality (1963) was extended by Simon (1983) to the infinite-dimensional setting, now called the Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality. This book presents a unified method to show asymptotic convergence of solutions to a stationary solution for abstract parabolic evolution equations of the gradient form by utilizing this Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality. In order to apply the abstract results to a wider class of concrete nonlinear parabolic equations, the usual Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality is extended, which is published here for the first time. In the second version, these abstract results are applied to reaction-diffusion equations with discontinuous coefficients, reaction-diffusion systems, and epitaxial growth equations. The results are also applied to the famous chemotaxis model, i.e., the Keller-Segel equations even for higher-dimensional ones.
