Pueblo Viejo-Pucara is one of the coastal archaeological sites that were ruled by the Inka Empire on the central coast of Peru, inhabited by the Caringa people. Labor colonists relocated to the site as part of Inka strategies of annexation of new territories, reducing local polities' power. Archaeological evidence points to connections between the Caringa people and highland communities. An unexplored line of evidence is people's food habits, identity, diet and nutrition. The way society prepares, serves, and eats its food is socio-culturally shaped. An integrative approach based on bioarchaeological, dental anthropological, biochemical, and ethnohistorical data is applied, revealing significant intra-site variability and food behaviors being dictated by people's identity and social status, additionally impacting childhood nutritional condition. The symbolic meaning behind food was embodied in ritual and funerary events, reinforcing local identities, local food cooking modalities, storage facilities and exchange between neighborhoods.

Along the coast of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, there are numerous remains linked to the manufacture of purple dyes. This study focuses on the site of Torregarcía (Almería, Spain), located in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a protected coastal area of particular ecological interest. Torregarcía was initially excavated during 1980s and was identified as a Roman salting factory where the complementary activity of dyeing was also practised. Despite its importance, it has gone unnoticed in the historiography of the last three decades and has never been the subject of dedicated scientific publication. The investigations presented in this book have been carried out using non-invasive prospecting techniques, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and have revealed the importance of the exploitation of purple dye as the main site activity. More complex installations associated with the excavated structures and a large shell pit are also described. Alongside these, other buildings and shells have also been documented along the coastline of this site. All of this forms what we call the "purple landscape" in the southeast of the peninsular coast, which allows the Natural Park to show archaeological heritage beyond any excavations carried out to date.

Urbanism and its Impact on Human Health demonstrates how social, economic and political changes impacted the everyday lives of the people of Knossos, at the fundamental level of their health and diet, during the Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique periods.Knossos, in north-central Crete, was an important site in Aegean and Mediterranean networks throughout this timespan, though the city experienced cycles of urban development and decline. As an extensively studied and well-documented site, it provides a unique opportunity to study long-term phenomena associated with its varied past. The present osteological and isotopic research is integrated with previous work on material culture and textual sources to provide a contextualised interpretation of the lifeways and social history of the people of Knossos.

The essays in this volume explore questions relating to human dispersals and exchange across the varied environments of Eurasia. Part One focuses on the Neolithic and how agriculture led to new adaptive niches for human societies. This process involved population and linguistic expansion, but could also be expressed through exploitation of the environment in new ways. In Part Two, the emphasis shifts to exchange between east and west across Eurasia in the Bronze Age and Middle Ages. Chapters in the book discuss topics as varied as J¿mon plant cultivation, linguistic borrowings by agropastoral groups, the spread of gold and silverwares across the steppes, and customs related to feasting in medieval northern China. The volume will be of interest to archaeologists and historical linguists alike, particularly those working on long-term social change across Eurasia.

This monograph covers the excavations conducted at the Ptolemaic-Roman city of Tell Timai by the University of Hawaii from 2009 - 2020. It is divided into four parts. Chapter 1 concerns the excavation and identification of a previously unknown Ptolemaic-Roman temple complex in the north-west of the site, focusing on a monumental stone gateway and mud brick enclosure wall. Chapter 2 documents a large domestic structure on the outside of the enclosure and its associated domestic material culture. Chapter 3 discusses several Late Roman burials interred on the ruins of the temple's western enclosure wall. And Part 4 analyses the initial excavations of a 2nd century Roman temple in the centre of the city, as well as the extensive pre-temple occupation layers and architecture found beneath, which potentially had later usage as a church.

This investigation shows the interaction between socio-political changes and climate crisis in the development of violence in the pre-Hispanic Peruvian central coast and how this violence affected specific population segments. This research highlights three factors that triggered violent episodes in the area: the emergence of social inequalities/a warrior elite; socio-political crises that were produced after the fall of a previous social order; and the need to fight for resources, either during severe droughts or to control the resources of the middle valley region. Males, especially those dedicated to military activities or those from the lower status, were more exposed to violence than the rest of the population. However, in times when violence rose, females were equally affected.Further comparisons of these findings with other Andean regions showed that not all societies reacted in the same way when faced with similar political and environmental challenges.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the technological knowledge needed to produce Neolithic Majiayao-style pottery (5300-4000 cal yr BP) which is famous for its painted designs in black and red. It examines the technological choices in the production of fine and coarse Majiayao-style pottery found across three river valleys, all located near the border area of Chinese provinces Gansu and Qinghai. Through macroscopic examination, thin-section petrography and experimental archaeology, this book investigates how the same pottery style was made across this large geographical area. Specifically, the study examines whether similar technological knowledge in pottery production at different places is connected to a yet unknown social knowledge shared by prehistoric communities. This book suggests that shared social knowledge could be the reason behind the wide distribution of this pottery style and its production technology.Seven appendices are available online to download, including primary data, photos, and photomicrographs from macroscopic and microscopic analyses of archaeological pottery and sampled geological material.

The Graduate Archaeology at Oxford (GAO) International Conference 2021 provided early career researchers with the opportunity to share their work and ideas in regard to interaction, trade and mobility in archaeology. Over the three-day conference, this topic was analysed from different perspectives: social interactions, economy and trade, and maritime network. The array of papers, all characterised by a coherent theme, contain contributions from researchers in different academic and geographical backgrounds. Interactions, trade and mobility can be interpreted and conceived in a variety of ways, and this is especially evident in these proceedings, as the conference was organised and took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly affected how we interact in everyday life.

'This is one of the most delightful and innovative conference proceedings I have read. The book has a wonderful variety of creative contributions where each paper pops like a wild flower in the green field of a rock festival. There are continuities and common threads (place making, networks, phenomenology), but each paper unravels a world of its own.' Kostis Kourelis, Franklin & Marshall College, Professor of Architectural History'This is a really exciting and timely book that goes beyond the limits of traditional archaeology to respond to an all-but-unprecedented global situation. As contemporary archaeology continues to expand and become recognised both within and outside academic departments as a crucial sub-field, this volume provides an important space for showing the potential of archaeology in the present day and for the future.' The Late Formative site of Salango, on the central coast of Ecuador, functioned as a sacred centre of increasing influence from 600 BC to 100 BC. This period saw eight main episodes of construction and use of an elaborate sequence of Middle and Late Engoroy phase ceremonial floors, houses, and platforms. Complementing the author's previous work 'Cultural Identity, Transition, and Interaction at Salango, Coastal Ecuador' (BAR S3109, 2022), this book presents previously unpublished data concerning the front halves of those structures, reconstructs the complete structure design for each episode, and offers an interpretation of the overall sequence. As well as details of the architecture, descriptions are given of human burials, artefact offerings including anthropomorphic figurine depositions, and other associated features. Readers familiar with earlier treatments of the site will now be able both to see how the original field data were used to make the reconstructions, and to appreciate more fully the complexity and richness of this unique and important site.

In this book Dr Lilian Dogiama considers the role of hunting at the Neolithic community of Çatalhöyük and its significance in shaping personal and communal identities by focusing on its stone projectile points. Wild faunal remains indicate that hunting remained in practice, even though domesticated animals and plants comprised the staple diet of the people of Çatalhöyük. Hunting and the 'wild' are venerated in the site's iconography, while obsidian projectile points -as the only surviving parts of hunting weapons- were ubiquitous in the site. The author uses a plethora of attributes that include depositional context, use wear, impact damage, fragmentation, raw material and various techno-morphological characteristics to analyse the projectile points from the site. Her findings indicate that the Çatalhöyük projectile point assemblage consisted of two groups that were used and treated in very distinct ways. The first group comprised projectile weapons that were used in hunting and exhibit clear signs of actual use, whereas the second group consisted of bifaces that were likely reserved for ceremonial purposes given their pristine condition and special mode of deposition. Drawing from her analysis and ethnographic examples Dogiama argues that hunting was not merely an alternate subsistence strategy but an arena where symbolic expression and social identities could be performed and negotiated.

Inhabited since the Middle Formative, Xoclán developed as an urban centre from the Early Classic onwards. The current archaeological park covers 52 hectares and includes the civic-ceremonial area and some other platforms, while the remaining structures that constituted part of the ancient city were involved in the recent expansion of Mérida, with many being destroyed to allow for the construction of new buildings. Through this study, it was possible to identify other quarters outside the park that were once part of the site and are now under modern asphalt, to hypothesise the functions of these ancient quarters and to define the chronology of the city's development, reconstructing - as far as possible - the limits of the settlement, which at least had an area of 9 square kilometres. Finally, an approach to what happened afterwards is presented, and to the various phases of use that affected the area and its heritage.

This book presents a study of Bithynia from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. It is organized in two parts, divided chronologically by the expedition of Alexander the Great to Asia and the subsequent foundation of the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia. The first part deals with the main problems relating to the Greek foundations in this geographical area (Astakos, Kalchedon, Kios, Myrleia and Olbia) and the regional influence of the great powers (Athens, Sparta, Persia) in the late Archaic and Classical period. Ample space is given to the non-Greek presence in the area, examining the issues relating to the satrapy of Phrygia. In the second part, the focus is on the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia, whose formation profoundly modifies the political and social balances present in the area in the previous period. Finally, an appendix is dedicated to a short exposition concerning the monetary issues of the kings of Bithynia.

As the result of a systematic survey of the fields covering the Late Roman pottery workshop of Sidi Zahruni (Nabeul, Tunisia), we have documented an enormous amount of pottery, especially amphorae, which enabled us to study in detail the production of this workshop. The African 3 - Keay 25 form was particularly prevalent. We also studied the exports of this pottery in the western Mediterranean, carrying out an exhaustive follow-up of the evidence found in the areas importing such goods. The study of the Sidi Zahruni amphorae has allowed us to make an important contribution to the knowledge of trade between Africa and the western Mediterranean in the late Roman period, raising the question of the products contained within these amphorae. It has allowed us to assess the importance of the port of Neapolis as a key centre for commercial exports between Roman Africa and the provinces of the western Mediterranean.

The Early Regional Development (100 BC-AD 300) funerary precinct at Salango, on the central coast of Ecuador, was situated at the point of convergence of the Bahía II and Early Guangala culture zones. With plentiful line drawings and colour photographs, this book uses pottery from the precinct to present a detailed and closely contextualized description of Early Regional Development ceramic traditions for coastal Ecuador. As a result, we gain valuable insights into the dynamics of cultural identity, transition, and interaction as manifest in a highly structured pottery assemblage from a key Pre-Columbian site of this area. Attention is brought to designs made with the two principal decorative modes: iridescent paint on serving wares and red finger paint designs on kitchen wares. Assemblage analysis points to the complex set of cultural factors and processes involved in its composition, and an important local ceramic tradition is identified for the first time. Spanish summaries are included for each chapter.

Waterways have been key factors in the development of societies from prehistoric times, particularly due to their role as vectors for cultural interactions, material exchange, and transmission of knowledge. The fluidity of these highways of transport and communications is tightly linked to the presence of transit points: spaces with unique geographical characteristics that acted as nodal points between different communities. Transit points are thus defined as places of intense social contacts, putting objects of physical geography into the domain of social sciences and humanities. The subject is challenging, as activities that happen in aquatic spaces seldom leave substantial archaeological traces behind. Nevertheless, by focusing on the intersection between humans and their environment down by the water, this book demonstrates what can be achieved by changing the research paradigm to one that fully embraces the nuances of the aquatic world, and especially the intricate connection between society and waterscapes.

This book examines the characterisation of common pottery productions present in Roman period contexts at sites around the ancient city of Lucus Augusti (Lugo, Spain). Using an approach that focuses on the analysis of a hybrid culture, which is echoed in the pottery record, we study the common pottery from the hillforts of Saa (A Pastoriza), Agra dos Castros (Marcelle) and Viladonga (Castro de Rei). These sites are located at different distances from the city and were occupied during different periods from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Through the study of these sites, we observe the different realities in this area, which help to interpret the transformations that took place after the integration of this territory into the Roman world.

This book proposes a new approach to the Hellenistic and Roman harbours of the Aegean, based on the combined study of harbours and contemporary ships, seamanship, and commerce. It focuses on the capacity of harbours to accommodate and serve certain numbers of ships, their cargo, their crews, and their passengers. This is achieved through the study of a variety of archaeological, written, and geomorphological data on harbour configuration, and subsequent analysis relating these harbours with the ships that were most likely to use them. Two harbours are used as cases studies, the important commercial centres of Delos and Kenchreai. The results reached concerning these harbours are then discussed in a wider perspective and contextualized with other contemporary sites in the Aegean, as well as within a wider scientific discussion over commerce and seamanship in the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean.

Lithuanian Baltic Sea Coasts During the Holocenefocuses on the relicts of the cultural and natural landscapes that survived in the Baltic Sea during the final Paleolithic-Middle Neolithic period in Lithuania. Using a combination of interdisciplinary research methodologies from archaeology, physical and biomedical sciences, with innovative use of underwater technologies, the contributors identify complex underwater landscapes (relic forests, peat bogs, lagoons, paleodelts or palaeo-riverbeds) and cultural objects to determine the evolution of marine paleobasin formation, sea level fluctuations and climate change.
