This new reader brings together in annotated form and explanatory introductions, 80 speeches, declarations, memorandums, programmes, plans, resolutions and (extracts from) treaties, covering the period from 1929 (Briand Memorandum) to 1995 (Mitterrand's speech to the European Parliament).

It covers magic, witchcraft, astrology, alchemy and other related occult themes and presents them, not as disparate elements of folkloric belief and intellectual aberrations, but as parts of a coherent, intellectually rigorous and scientifically challenging world-view, consistently argued in accordance with its given basic principles.

This will be the first collection of translated documents to appear in any language on the crusading movement in the late middle ages. The principal themes explored will include planning and initiation of crusades, their preaching, recruitment, finance and leadership, and the broad spectrum of popular response, from enthusiasm to condemnation.
