  • - Across Australia on a bicycle
    av Jerome J Murif
    139,-

A captivating account of the first South to North crossing of the Australian continent on a bicycle, in 1897."Then the bicycle, loaded now for the expedition, was lifted downstairs; I shook hands with the landlady, told her I might not be back for tea and not to keep it waiting, and quietly pedalled away..."This is how, without any sponsor, and almost no one knowing about his plan, that Jerome Murif departed from Adelaide with the firm intent to reach Port Darwin, more than 3,000 km (1,900 miles) away, and be the first to cross the Australian continent by bicycle from South to North. He did so with very little food and gear, and at a time when roads were non-existent, on a bicycle that didn't have gears or brakes.Far from the speed record attempts, Murif did his crossing at a leisurely pace, even taking time to tour the Alice Springs region on the way. This account of his journey, first published in 1897, is based heavily on his own diary; it is full of humor and captivating from the first word to the last.

  • - The History, Travel Guide for Business, Vacation, Honeymoon, Tour
    av Ibrahim Lloyd
    378,-

Taipei Tourism, Taiwan. The History, Travel Guide for Business, Vacation, Honeymoon, Tour. Taipei is a tough little city whose beauty lies in its blend of Chinese culture with a curious fusion of Japanese, Southeast Asian and American influences. In many ways this 300-year-old city is like a living museum. The Taoist temples buzz with the prayers of the hopeful; the wooden boards of Japanese-era mansions creak under the feet of visitors; and the pilfered treasures in the National Palace Museum date back 5000 years. Merchant villas to military barracks have been restored, reworked and now live again as a museum or a shopfront. From the heirlooms of a tea merchant to the memories of a cemetery for the victims of the White Terror, Taipei is a city that takes great pride in celebrating its history the triumphant and the tragic. Taipei's oddness is one of its charms. It may be inspired by the kawaii (cutesy) culture of Japan, but there's a lot of home-grown humour in there too. In the puppet museum you will find a strip-tease marionette oozing knock-kneed naughtiness; the idea of chocolate sauce on a steak is accepted; themed restaurants transport you to a world where you eat hotpot from a toilet bowl or in a hospital ward for dinner; and one of the top souvenir items of the city is a larger-than-life cock-shaped pineapple sponge cake. Dining out is so popular that many studio apartments in Taipei don't have kitchens: eating is cheap, casual and tasty. Indeed going out to eat is the best way to understand the Taiwanese. Whether you're getting your fingers greasy sampling snacks at one of the night markets or sharing Chinese dishes at a Taiwanese rèchǎo (stir-fried) joint, the defining characteristic is the element of fun. Yes, that is an invitation to try stinky tofu. While you're at it, you might as well have some Taiwan Beer too! With its lanes of blackened walk-ups and countless shopfronts, the city may look like it was thrown together in a hurry, but look again. Great care has been taken to make it a truly liveable place for people: public transport grids the city well and is fast and cheap; every few blocks there's a park with a generous supply of benches, shelters and flowers; good (and sometimes great) coffee is everywhere; the MRT has courtesy umbrellas free for rainy days; and a clean and free public toilet is never far away.

France Tour Guide. Tourism A country of elegance, timeless traditions and unparalleled atmosphere of sophistication, France never ceases to amaze its visitors. It's hard to find someone who doesn't know main landmarks of the country, but France has much more to offer. The country has countless landmarks, internationally famous places and signature cultural destinations. The most famous museum in the world is also located in France. Louvre changed its status several times during its long history. It was a royal residence, a prison, a fortress and even an academy. Nowadays, its beautiful halls exhibit thousands of priceless items. Versailles has become a true shrine of medieval culture. The same named palace is the biggest sight of this place. Long ago it was the residence of French kings, so its spacious halls have retained their elegance and luxury till our days. During an excursion in the palace, tourists will know more about the history of that place and the purpose of every room. The most famous landmarks of Versailles are the Grand Canal and the Neptune Fountain. Versailles is located in the centre of a beautiful park decorated with statues and fountains. There are two historic buildings in the distant part of the park the Grand Trianon and the Petite Trianon. France is home to internationally famous Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral. During its long history, the cathedral was a witness of many important historic events. During many years the cathedral never ceases to amaze its visitors with its magnificent beauty and splendour. However, when asked about Paris or France, most people will name another landmark Eiffel Tower, which is located in the heart of the capital. There is an observation deck on the top of the tower, from which visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of Paris.

Review by Robert Overson, - Surfer and single father. "A strong and vivid story without bitterness, which is an achievement given the circumstances. I have enjoyed reading books like Caught inside by Daniel Duane, In search of Captain Zero, and Cosmic Banditos by Allan C. Weisbecker, not forgetting Making Mavericks by Frost Hesson and Ian Spiegelman. And I'd say Alex Epicure is up there with them. I was truly inspired by his debut novel, not least because we share the situation of being single parent fathers. In this new book, a prequel, Alex's language and vivid descriptions make me feel I'm accompanying him to the Dominican Republic and its paradisiacal beaches, not to mention its vibrant people, as if standing next to him. And now I understand why it turned out the way it did. Recommended reading for anyone who dreams of sun and white sand, but wonders about culture clashes and general kerfuffle."

Leeds, United Kingdom. Travel and Tourism Guide. Just an hour south of the southern Dales and one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK, Leeds is the glitzy embodiment of rediscovered northern self-confidence. A decade and a half of redevelopment has transformed the city centre from a near-derelict mill town into a vision of 21st-century urban chic, with architecturally daring malls woven into the fabric of the city centre, a revitalised Victorian mill district and an innovative independent dining and drinking scene. People come from all over the north to indulge in shopping weekends, concert trips and the lively nightlife, giving the town a decidedly confident Yorkshire swagger. There's not much in the way of tourist sights except for the national Royal Armouries museum, but excellent transport links to the Dales, York, Harrogate, Manchester and Haworth (of Brontë literary fame) can make it a good base, without the touristy veneer of neighbouring York.
