Mit welchen Erwartungen machte ich mich auf den Weg in die Ukraine? Der Antrieb mag einer der gewöhnlichsten gewesen sein, der Menschen zum Reisen bringt: ein neues Land kennenzulernen mitsamt seinen Menschen, seiner Kultur, seinen Städten, seinem Nachtleben. Also ein ganz normales Land? Beinahe - abgesehen davon, dass der Osten der Ukraine zur Zeit meiner Reise schon seit acht Jahren durch einen schwelenden und in Westeuropa nur marginal wahrgenommenen Krieg terrorisiert wurde. Und abgesehen davon, dass im Norden des Landes ein riesiges Gebiet schon jahrzehntelang seit der Explosion eines Reaktorblocks des Kernkraftwerks in Tschernobyl entvölkert ist und brachliegt. Dort holt sich die Natur ihr Recht auf ungestörtes Dasein wieder zurück und teilt sich den Platz mit den dem Verfall preisgegebenen Geisterstädten. Beeindruckend, diese von der Natur zurückeroberte Landschaft samt ihren leerstehenden Dörfern und Städten zu sehen. Aber ich wollte erfahren, dass auch dieses Land die faszinierenden Seiten der Normalität zu bieten hatte, die das Leben auf Reisen so reich undbunt machen: So genoss ich die Fahrt im Nachtzug in der ersten Klasse nach Kharkiv, die wirklich erstklassigen Speisen der örtlichen Gastronomie samt gehaltvoller Getränkeund das Nachtleben, bei dem zwischen noblen Clubs und echten Kaschemmen für jede Lebenslage und für jeden Geschmack etwas zu finden war. Auch hier, in dieser krisengebeutelten Region, fanden sich offenherzige und lebenslustige Menschen, bei denen ich couchsurfen konnte und die mir einen Teil ihrer Zeit schenkten. Und zur Normalität gesellten sich Frustrationen bei der Zimmersuche wie überraschend unkonventionelleReparaturarbeiten. Bei meiner Abreise ahnte ich nicht, dass es diese Normalität, die ich dort erleben und sehen durfte, schon bald nicht mehr geben würde...

This vintage book contains an account of the author's trip to America in 1935. A. G. Macdonell, (1895-1941) was a novelist and journalist. His most famous works include: "The Autobiography of a Cad", arguably amongst the funniest books ever written; "Lords and Masters", a blunt and prescient satire, and "Napoleon and His Marshals" (1934), which is considered to be amongst the best accounts of the Napoleonic Wars ever written. This entertaining and insightful travelogue is highly recommended for fans of Macdonell's work and lovers of great travel writing. HEARD ISLAND, an improbably remote speck in the far Southern Ocean, lies four thousand kilometres to the south-west of Australia - with Antarctica its nearest continent.
