This book contains essential pieces of jazz vocabulary as well as important exercises that all pertain to major seventh chords. The melodic ideas in this book are derived from transcriptions of some of the great jazz improvisers and the exercises represent are some of the crucial sequences and patterns most great musicians - classical or jazz - work on at some point in their career. This book is intended for jazz improvisers and composers who aim to broaden their palette of musical expression and eloquence, improve their technique, explore new possibilities, and work on their reading level. The main categories of material in this book are licks, scale sequences, embellishments of the major triad, pentatonic permutations, diatonic intervals, diatonic triads, diatonic seventh chords, and diatonic hexachords.

An Archive of Ancient Rhythms from West Africa translates the oral tradition of ancient west African rhythms into comprehensive standard music notation. All ancient names have been maintained as well as their related orchestrations. This archive contains forty five ancient rhythmic songs. Each song is composed of two or more coordinated drum parts. Out of context, these parts add up to more than one hundred examples of ancient rhythms from west Africa. Additionally, this book documents the first official printing of the Universal Meter as a service to compositional orchestration. Jonathan Crocco is a career drum instructor in Paris, France. His symphonies are at present universally acknowledged to be master-pieces; whoever seriously wishes to extend his knowledge or to produce new works can never devote too much reflection and study upon then. For this reason every way or manner of making them accessible and popular has a certain merit, nor are the rather numerous arrangements published so far without relative merit, though, for the most part, they seem to be of but little intrinsic value for deeper research. The poorest lithograph, the most faulty translation always gives an idea, indefinite though it be, of the genius of Michel Angelo, of Shakespeare, in the most incomplete piano-arrangement we recognize here and there the perhaps half effaced traces of the master's inspiration. By the development in technique and mechanism which the piano has gained of late, it is possible now to attain more and better results than have been attained so far. With the immense development of its harmonic power the piano seeks to appropriate more and more all orchestral compositions. In the compass of its seven octaves it can, with but a few exceptions, reproduce all traits, all combinations, all figuration's of the most learned, of the deepest tone-creations, and leaves to the orchestra no other advantages, than those of the variety of tone-colors and massive effects -- immense advantages, to be sure.Such has been my aim in the work I have undertaken and now lay before the musical world. I confess that I should have to consider it a rather useless employment of my time, if I had but added one more to the numerous hitherto published piano-arrangements, following in their rut; but I consider my time well employed if I have succeeded in transferring to the piano not only the grand outlines of Beethoven's compositions but also all those numerous fine details, and smaller traits that so powerfully contribute to the completion of the ensemble. My aim has been attained if I stand on the level with the intelligent engraver, the conscientious translator, who comprehend the spirit of a work and thus contribute to the knowledge of the great masters and to the formation of the sense for the beautiful. The primary goal of this book is to train the ability to read music and free the musician from being dependent on tablatures or other communication systems that are not used in the academic or professional worlds. This book has been designed to train aural skills concurrently with reading skills. Instructions and preview are available at the Robert Anthony Publishing website. Volume 1 is comprised of 300 progressive exercises that cover the keys of C Major, F Major, G Major, A Minor, D Minor and E Minor. Time signatures include 4/4 (Common Time), 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, and 2/2 (Cut Time). Volume 2 expands into all keys of up to four sharps (#) and four flats (b). The exercises are all eight measures (two phrases, or one period) in length. While they are composed to be melodic and pleasant to the ear, they are also composed to be difficult to memorize, and utilize many rhythms that seem to be absent from other sight reading books..
