The Sunday Times Sports Book of the YearA Times Book of the YearA Financial Times Book of the YearA Guardian Book of the YearA New Statesman Book of the Year'The heartwarming story of the collaboration and friendship between English football's oddest couple, Elton John and Graham Taylor' The Times' A wonderful, feel-good account of an ultimately English provincial story' Simon Kuper_____________________ An unforgettable British underdog story from one of our greatest narrative nonfiction writers, John Preston, and the international musical icon and bestselling author, Sir Elton John.Britain in the 1970s was beset by unrest and unemployment, as inflation soared, fuel was scarce, and hooliganism was on the rise. And for Watford FC, the outlook was even gloomier. Rundown and rat-infested, Watford were an ailing side with holes in their kit and barely enough fans to fill a stand. Of the 92 clubs in the Football League, spread across four divisions, Watford were in 92nd place.Meanwhile, Elton John was the most successful rockstar in the world. With six-inch platforms, spangled jumpsuits, and peroxide hair, he was glamorous, gay, and seemingly a world away from the semi-detached house in Pinner where he had supported Watford FC as a child. Many assumed he would move to America. Instead, he bought the football club.Watford Forever is the remarkable story of Elton John's ownership of Watford FC and its transformational journey to the top of the First Division under iconic manager Graham Taylor. Perhaps most remarkably, four of the same players who had been written off as has-beens went with them all the way from the bottom to the top. Inspiring and infectiously funny, this is a tribute to football's unlikeliest friendship as Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback with a love of Vera Lynn, beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a community.Immersed in the grime and glamour of '70s Britain, Watford Forever is one of sport's great underdog stories and a love letter to the beautiful game.

I dedicate the book to my late husband, the well-known Albanian artist, Françesk Radi. He left behind the story of a 20-year-old man with a guitar who was persecuted by one of the cruelest dictatorial regimes. My never-fading love for Franko empowered me to raise myself above the pain and lethargy in order to prevent his story hiding beneath the dust of forgetfulness.Franko was the first Albanian singer-songwriter. He brought innovation to modern Albanian music. His work, from its beginnings, departed from the classic structure of Albanian light music and his musical creativity founded the Albanian version of English and American pop-rock. Franko's performances aimed to bring awareness and social change. His quasi-rebellious attitude was a response to the hostility of the regime towards the music that he loved.Franko was heavily criticized for evoking Western modernism. For the 22-year-old artist Françesk Radi, a young man in love with music and once appreciated by hundreds of thousands of people, his musical creativity was brutally interrupted. Prosecuted by the dictatorial regime for introducing foreign modern trends into his music, he was expelled from the capital and sent for re-education 'among the working class' in the remote and small town of Fushë-Arrëz in Northern Albania, a village of woodcutters and miners. The book brings to the public many stories that weave together multiple strands of events accounting for the fall of a talented artist during communism and his rise when democracy was restored. To the world history of music, this book adds testimony to the mistreatment that Albanian artists suffered under the communist dictatorship. The book is written in three languages, English, German, and Albanian. The documents and photos presented here are obtained from family records as well as state archives. Some of them are published for the first time. What makes the book special is the transcripts of Franko's best musical creations, which represent Albanian pop music of the seventies.Françesk Radi was a singer, songwriter, music composer, and multi-instrumentalist. In addition to double bass, he played guitar, piano, guitar-bass, mandolin, and a variety of two-string folk instruments. Franko left behind an enduring legacy of outstanding pop songs and arranged folk songs. His msical interpretations are part of the Golden Voices of Albania.
ORANGE BRICK IN WARM SUN: JIM MORRISON IN DC examines the Washington, D.C. hangouts of Jim Morrison - the lead singer for the rock band "The Doors" - who attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia from 1959 to 1961. During that period Morrison spent much of his free time canvassing the District where he garnered creative inspiration from a variety of art galleries, book shops, libraries, movie theaters and night spots. ORANGE BRICK IN WARM SUN provides new details on the expeditions Jim Morrison embarked upon into the nation's capital.
This ten-chapter book explores how music and society are, and have been, intertwined and mutually influential. It examines the agents behind these connections: who determines musical cultures in society? Which social groups are represented in particular musical contexts? Which social groups are silenced or less well represented in music's histories, and why?
Players today face a great challenge as some musical instruments and playing styles have reached their climax in producing rhythms tones colors and patterns so the players must invent new styles of playing or new waves to maintain their popularity. Many newcomers to the playing field are at risk if they only imitate and follow a popular player and his genre. The author of this book discusses how to build such a new wave, after analyzing the potential and opportunities of the player and developing a vision and plan of action for innovation. How to face failures, defeats, and maintaining a player's existence throughout the career is explained well in the book, and motivating for a long and stable journey is also discussed.Describing the changes or transformations that took place from the day music was born to the present is a very complicated task. In ancient times Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th and 21st Century, transformation took place slowly and often took a hundred years or more, but today it is changing very rapidly in a year or a few months. The rise of social media is rapidly changing the world's technologies, architecture, fashion, furniture, cars, roads, cities, and many others. In such a world, music cannot remain unchanged. The people facing this change are lining up for a transformation. Therefore, people are expecting a change in everything, as well as in music. The players have reached the end of a long journey with that musical instrument or have not been able to go beyond the playing style of that instrument. Since there are no restrictions on the instruments, the players must use all the possibilities available with those instruments. In this book, the procedure, and knowledge that a player should have to establish such a wave, the method that builds his mind for it, the system of using that knowledge and procedure, the methods of socializing a new wave, and the pattern that maintain it continuously and the way of keeping the performer in the field are also thoroughly analyzed. An analysis of the role of the player and what level he should be in today's context is a leading theme discussed in this book. The book discusses why this task should be done and how it should be done. The author discusses and vividly explains the present complexity of the giant music industry and gives ideas to establish successful methods to overcome those unseen problems. In any field, if the competition is high and broad, there is a collapse, and it is sometimes not easy to rebuild properly. The value of more new organizations to promote newcomers entering the field is a must and their knowledge and the activities for this task are discussed. September 2023

MUSICAL SCALES that "sing" THE MAYAN CALENDAR?? Could they really exist?Indeed they do! And anyone holding this book can not only READ about them, but EXPERIMENT with them, since full tuning data is included here. As to their creator, JEREMY HALADYNA, here are clear case studies of the original music he devised to fold around his scale creations, much of it now commercially released. Here are scales that "sound out" the delicate dance of Earth and Venus, which the classic Maya observed with the keenest eyes, making them possibly the greatest Timekeepers that ever lived...there is even a scale here for the heart-stopping moment that was December 2012! Within these covers, too, are photos from the author's 10 trips to the Mayan region (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras)--alongside a wide range of monochrome musical examples... fully covering the gamut from Mayan sport, to Mayan flora and fauna, through their colorful roster of traditional deities, to their own reckoning of ancient history.
Jazz A to Z provides an authoritative guide to 48 jazz musicians the author considers to be the originators and innovators, including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker and "Fats" Waller. The entries give an account of the musician's life (often tragic), their style, significance, best recordings, the type of jazz they played, and some musical context. Many other jazz musicians beside the subject of the entry are discussed in the chapters. The styles covered include New Orleans, swing, bebop, hard bop, west coast cool and free bop. The text is enlivened by vivid black and white portraits of the various musicians. Written in an engaging, accessible style, this is an authoritative guide to jazz that will be of great value to the novice and of much interest to aficionados.
In the UK in the 1970s, there was no bigger band than Slade. With six number 1 singles (three straight in at number 1) and 17 consecutive top 20 hits, Slade were the most successful British group of the 1970s measured on singles sales. But Slade were also a phenomemon live. Vocalist & guitarist Noddy Holder, guitarist Dave Hill, bassist & violinist Jim Lea and drummer Don Powell had been playing together since 1966 (initially as The N' Betweens and then Ambrose Slade) and seasoned performers by the time of their breakthrough hit in 1971.Slade's live concerts were something to behold, and this book captures them in performance in the words of over 300 fans. The journey goes from the boot-stomping skinhead days of 'Get Down and Get With It', through the chart-topping glam rock era of 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' and 'Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me', and onto their ultimately unsuccessful mid-'70s attempt to break America before the chicken-in-a-basket doldrums of their career and the original line-up called it quits in 1992.These stories will make you laugh, cry and be transported back to the early 1970s, when Slade were all over the radio, the TV and the news. This is Slade loud and raucous, with Nod's distinctive vocals, Dave's crazy stage outfits and Jim's virtuoso guitar and violin playing, all held together by Don's solid drumming. With forewords from Seventies Glam Rockers Suzi Quatro and The Sweet's Andy Scott, and packed with contributions from a host of celebrity admirers including John Coughlan (Status Quo), Rick Buckler (The Jam), Gered Mankowitz, Damian O'Neill (Undertones/That Petrol Emotion), Andy Kershaw, Ray Laidlaw (Lindisfarne), Mick Talbot (Style Council/Dexy's Midnight Runners), Jim Bob (Carter USM), Dave Hemingway (Housemartins/Beautiful South), Roddy Byers (The Specials), Mathew Priest (Dodgy), JC Carroll (The Members), Gary Crowley, Carl Hunter (The Farm), Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff), Nik Kershaw, Bob Young (Status Quo) and Dave Wakeling (The English Beat), this is a Slade book unlike any other. If you grew up in the 1970s, you will have heard a Slade song on the radio every few minutes. And if you walk into a UK shopping centre or supermarket any time from mid-November onwards, you'll be sure to hear the Slade song that is now as much a part of Christmas as Santa Claus...

A surprising study reveals a plethora of attempts to communicate with non-humans in the modern era. In Interspecies Communication, music scholar Gavin Steingo examines significant cases of attempted communication beyond the human--cases in which the dualistic relationship of human to non-human is dramatically challenged. From singing whales to Sun Ra to searching for alien life, Steingo charts the many ways we have attempted to think about, and indeed to reach, beings that are very unlike ourselves. Steingo focuses on the second half of the twentieth century, when scientists developed new ways of listening to oceans and cosmic space--two realms previously inaccessible to the senses and to empirical investigation. As quintessential frontiers of the postwar period, the outer space of the cosmos and the inner space of oceans were conceptualized as parallel realities, laid bare by newly technologized "ears." Deeply engaging, Interspecies Communication explores our attempts to cross the border between the human and non-human, to connect with non-humans in the depths of the oceans, the far reaches of the universe, or right under our own noses.
An ambitious study of the ways opera has sought to ensure its popularity by keeping pace with changes in media technology. From the early days of television broadcasts to today's live streams, opera houses have embraced technology as a way to reach new audiences. But how do these new forms of remediated opera extend, amplify, or undermine production values, and what does the audience gain or lose in the process? In Screening the Operatic Stage, Christopher Morris critically examines the cultural implications of opera's engagement with screen media. Foregrounding the potential for a playful exchange and self-awareness between stage and screen, Morris uses the conceptual tools of media theory to understand the historical and contemporary screen cultures that have transmitted the opera house into living rooms, onto desktops and portable devices, and across networks of movie theaters. If these screen cultures reveal how inherently "technological" opera is as a medium, they also highlight a deep suspicion among opera producers and audiences toward the intervention of media technology. Ultimately, Screening the Operatic Stage shows how the conventions of televisual representation employed in opera have masked the mediating effects of technology in the name of fidelity to live performance.
This innovative study introduces the rhythms, melodies, language, and organization of traditional Chinese poetry and vocal arts. Using insights from cognitive neuroscience, digital humanities, musicology, and linguistics, Casey Schoenberger offers new perspectives on a wide range of issues in the field.
Ugo Rondinone's 2022 exhibition the water is a poem unwritten by the air / no. the earth is a poem unwritten by the fire at the Petit Palais in Paris explores the theme of transformation. Ugo Rondinone presents three ensembles of sculptures and a monumental video installation. Earth, sky, air, water and fire are invoked in the fullness of their spiritual dimension. Under the museum's painted ceilings, the first ensemble welcomes visitors in a farandole of suspended bodies painted in a clouded sky camouflage, underlining the ephemeral melding of air and water. A second ensemble is composed of seated sculptures of dancers at rest made from a blend of wax and earth collected from seven continents. The centerpiece artwork titled burn to shine, is a film installation presented in a monumental charred wood cylinder. The artwork depicts bodies coming together throughout movement, with dancers and musicians gathered around a fire in the desert from sunset to sunrise. In echo with John Giorno's poem titled You Got To Burn To Shine. This catalogue is a unique document of the dialogue between Rondinone's works confronted with the museum's architecture and its collections.UGO RONDINONE (*1964, Brunnen, Switzerland) is recognized as one of the major voices of his generation, an artist who composes searing meditations on nature and the human condition while establishing an organic formal vocabulary in sculpture, painting, video, and performance. The New York-based artist borrows from ancient and modern cultural sources; his works exude pathos and humor, going straight to the heart of the most pressing issues of our time.
