At a time when Côte d'Ivoire was experiencing a military-political crisis and was split in two (2002), the Coupé-Décalé appeared as a real innovation in the Ivorian musical universe. It caused a "sensation" with cultural practices, a dress code, choreographic concepts and musical forms that were atypical of the time. While pre-existing genres, such as Reggae, Hip Hop and Zuglou, are positioned as "committed" music, Coupé-Décalé, on the other hand, is in a completely different register: that of bringing joy, setting the mood, forgetting the sad reality of this difficult period. Nearly two decades later, the Coupé-Décalé continues to enjoy great popularity among a community of fans who are sensitive to the ideology promoted and the social practices that derive from it. This study develops a reflection on the Coupé-Décalé, a form of cultural mediation that consolidates a subcultural identity. It aims first to show the pictorial and imagined representations of the youth subculture through musical content, then to examine the actors, practices and interactions that lead to the development of the musical work, and finally, to demonstrate how the public and the producers, through the reception of the music and the identification with the Coupé-Décalé, constitute a subculture. In short, the Coupé-Décalé is a subcultural identity. It specifies a new relationship to politics, to social norms and, above all, a quest for pleasure, endangerment and amusement. First is the global resonance of Mikhail Bakhtin as moral philosopher, theorist of dialogue, and cultural totem. How does his worldview complement that of his friendly rivals the formalists (and later semioticians), and which aspects of his value-system have been most cogently criticized? Second is an application of Bakhtinian principles of transposition to successive musicalized Russian classics (among them Pushkin's and Meyerhold's Boris Godunov, Tchaikovsky's and Prokofiev's Eugene Onegin, Prokofiev's War and Peace, Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, Pushkin's and Dargomyzhsky's Rusalka). A final theme is the creative--or capricious--reading of one literary master by another master, much later in time: Tolstoy's reading of Shakespeare, Nabokov's reading of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, Krzhizhanovsky's reading of Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw. Great writers, like great composers, absorb and transform earlier greatness into a new synthesis, and it is this activity that is commemorated in this volume.

In the spring of 1862, Lucy McKim, the nineteen-year-old daughter of a Philadelphia abolitionist Quaker family, traveled with her father to the Sea Islands of South Carolina to aid him in his efforts to organize humanitarian aid for thousands of newly freed slaves. During her stay she heard the singing of the slaves in their churches, as they rowed their boats from island to island, and as they worked and played. Already a skilled musician, she determined to preserve as much of the music as she could, quickly writing down words and melodies, some of them only fleeting improvisations. Upon her return to Philadelphia, she began composing musical settings for the songs and in the fall of 1862 published the first serious musical arrangements of slave songs. She also wrote about the musical characteristics of slave songs, and published, in a leading musical journal of the time, the first article to discuss what she had witnessed.In Songs of Sorrow renowned music scholar Samuel Charters tells McKim's personal story. Letters reveal the story of young women's lives during the harsh years of the war.
