What happens when the elitist space of 'Western' classical music seeks to diversify itself? And what are the social effects worked through diversity discourses in classical music institutions? Sounding difference addresses these timely concerns by critically examining how diversity work takes shape in a cultural sector so deeply implicated in hierarchies of class, structures of whiteness, and legacies of imperialism. Against persistent social exclusions in the sector, and sharpening inequality and upsurging ethnonationalism in Europe, the book draws from ethnographic and interview data to analyse how diversity discourses become constructed in the organisational and creative processes of music production. From rehearsal and performance practices to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sector's commitment to change, Kolbe reveals the institutional constraints and precarious labour relations that form around diversity work in classical music and skilfully considers what these processes can tell us about the remaking of class, race, and racism today. Overall, Sounding difference makes visible the contingent ways in which diversity discourses in the cultural industries contribute to the endurance of white middle-class social domination, yet also draws out under which conditions they may unlock a more radical cultural politics predicated on creative and social justice.
A discussion of White Limozeen, from Dolly's self-fashioning of her image to a rigorous critique of her genre.White Limozeen (1989) was a commercial recovery after Dolly Parton's first major failure two years previously with the release of Rainbow. This book is a case study in how an album is sold and a persona constructed. The album had a complex relationship to the country music genre at a time when the genre was in the middle of major sonic and cultural shifts, and it represents how country music saw itself. This question of identity was especially relevant since White Limozeen was produced by Ricky Skaggs, the bluegrass prodigy who was in the middle of his own genre widening experiments. The album reflects dense and complex production, shredding ideas of purity, studio craft, slickness, and authenticity. In it, Dolly seems to be imagining the limits of her own personae - the country girl, the blonde burlesque, the pop legend, the gospel singer. To study this album is to investigate Dolly's calculated role in self fashioning her image into the icon she is today.

An electroacoustic, olfactory, and textual project by artist Florian Hecker.Florian Hecker is an artist whose work is realized through the technical manipulation of sensory data. By utilizing machinic scales and registers, Hecker creates environments marked at once by overwhelming complexity and vexing subtlety, where audience members are led to dwell on the outer limits of their own perceptual capacities.Resynthesizers took place in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, in the Fitzpatrick-Leland House, a tri-level residence designed by Rudolf Schindler and built in 1936. Centered around a trio of compositions produced using a novel algorithm for texture synthesis, the exhibition also featured three olfactory accords selected by Marc vom Ende and Philip Kraft of Symrise, and three electrophoretic displays transmitting a libretto by Robin Mackay. The molecular construction of sensory experience enabled by the technical manipulation and synthesis of materials emerges as a central theme of Resynthesizers. The regime of these ‘immaterials’ disjoins sensation from inherited conceptual models, and in the encounter with its resyntheses we are challenged to reintegrate sense and formulate new concepts.Designed by NORM, Zurich, this meticulously assembled document features exhibition documentation by Fredrik Nilsen Studio and data visualizations by Axel Roebel alongside essays by Wendy Hui Kyong Chun and Alex H. Barnett, Marc Vom Ende and Philip Kraft, Robin Mackay, and Luciana Parisi.
The overarching goal of As Long As They Can Blow is to show the mutual respect that black and white jazz musicians had for each other and how a shared love of the music and the relative privacy of the recording studio resulted in hundreds of early interracial jazz recordings. At the book's heart is the first discography of these sessions ever put together and a concise list that can be used for quick access to those sessions. There is a brief history of the recording industry, with an emphasis on how the industry dealt with the question of race, as well as a list of formal and informal interactivity between black and white jazz musicians outside the recording studio. Finally, there is a piece in the voice of Mezz Mezzrow and one in the voice of Eddie Condon, both of whom were active in interracial sessions. The facts are there, but the author uses techniques of creative non-fiction to put them into story form.
This series of music for pipa with string quartet is part of the classical concerts program.Stringed instruments form the backbone of the Western classical symphony orchestra. The Eastern string instrument Pipa developed into a leading solo instrument as early as the Tang dynasty (618 - 709) in the East. In this set of classical concert programs, all pieces maintain the original and natural acoustic sound source of unplugged string instruments. It enables the encounter of different acoustic properties, different expressions of sound, and sound aesthetics that have developed over time in different regions. This Program lets old & new string instruments offer us an unforgettable musical experience _ from the fresh energy of the morning to the poetry of the sunset - from a silk bamboo tea house to a passionate dance in the desert of the Wild West - from the search for one's own identity to the singing of swinging hearts - from pearls falling on to a jade plate to the gallop of black horses... Each piece opens up a new perspective.

Andean or Peruvian vision focusing on the impact of Europe on Cuban or Antillean music and its influences on Peru and South America, since there are many false myths and dogmas about the terms "Afro-Latin" or "Afro-Caribbean" music when in truth the African influence was very minimal because Africa only produced primitive music with rudimentary musical instruments, and in truth it was Spain that directly influenced Cuban music and Europe on all the Antilles and all of South America, This approach is important to demystify many lies and false dogmas about Caribbean and South American music that had a strong influence and development in New York and Puerto Rico and from there another new configuration for South America, but many truths were hidden for commercial purposes and that even today commercial, record or business sectors continue to promote only for profit and never for cultural or artistic purposes.
