This suite was premiered in 2003 at Middle Tennessee State University with oboist Dwayne Pigg and Roger Hudson performing on guitar. Pink Floyd released its first album without any Syd Barrett involvement, and completed its reinvention as a fully immersive college-based band. This year Jethro Tull released Stand Up, its first with Ian Anderson as leader, and alongside Led Zeppelin the first to break the new music in the States. And the Who released Tommy, described as an "opera" on its sleeve. In 1969 Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, and Al Stewart redefined what modern folk music could mean, while Shirley & Dolly Collins linked it to the early music revival. This year Deep Purple, the Nice, Pink Floyd, and Procol Harum scrambled to plant flags in the establishment by performing with an orchestra. And this year the Rolling Stones returned to the U.S. for the first time since July 1966. It was the spearhead of the new British invasion, and it needed to clear the floor for all these others. In Cahoots, In Asbury Park is the story of one of the most important cities in music history, from the perspective of one band, Cahoots, and their closest counterparts and fans in the Asbury Park music scene. The book begins with the stories of two musicians whose careers literally began on separate side of the railroad tracks that divide Asbury Park in half at Springwood Avenue. In July 1970, Cahoots' bassist, John Luraschi, was on the roof of The Upstage music club, surrounded by armed musicians who set out to protect the club, where artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt and "Southside" Johnny Lyon honed their craft, before becoming music legends. Luraschi felt indebted to the club's owners, Tom and Margaret Potter, who provided him with a venue for self-expression after he lost his parents in his early 20s. On the west side of the tracks, Ernest "Boom" Carter benefited from the guidance and mentorship of the jazz legends that performed at its many establishments, such as the Orchid Lounge and Turf Club.
