Beethoven was a musical genius. He has given pleasure to millions. What is less well known is that he removed a nine-year-old child from his mother and embroiled himself in one of the most bitter, protracted custody disputes in childcare history. Karl van Beethoven was the only child of Johanna and Kaspar van Beethoven, the composer's brother. When Kaspar died, Beethoven was determined that Karl did not remain under his mother's care. He loathed Johanna. He frequently referred to her as 'poison', claiming she had infected Karl with her 'poison'. Beethoven was awarded guardianship over her child. Thereafter, his behaviour towards Karl, described in his own letters, in the observations of his contemporaries, and in court testimonies, constitutes one of the earliest, most comprehensive records of emotional and psychological abuse. This is the story of a child's resilience and survival in the face of cruelty and intolerance, and of Beethoven's failure to sever him from the mother he loved. It is a fictionalized memoir based on documented fact.

Indigenous peoples of Brazil have come to faith in Christ in large numbers in recent decades. As Christianity takes root in each culture, it may incorporate expressive forms of music and art, which can range from those identical to earlier cultural forms to those which are fully imported. But what happens when musicians and artists of a local indigenous community fuse elements from a variety of genres and create their own music? Are they just imitations of external forms? Or are they authentic creations from elements that have now become their own sounds, too? Christian musicians among the Xerente (pronounced Sheh-¿ren-teh) have created their own fusion genre(s) to express their faith, communicate the gospel, and edify their churches. Their music includes elements from their cultural tradition as well as from (secular) genres of the northeastern region of Brazil. Is it, then, authentically Xerente? As we discuss in this book, independent of tangible markers or its long history, the authenticity of an art form can be demonstrated through a number of connections with the community and signposted by its meaning and function among the people, as well as the competence and agency of the people in their artistic choices.

Ron Edwards (1930--2008) had a passion for recording and safeguarding for future generations Australia's unique folk heritage. In 1950, at a time when popular wisdom had it that Australia had few folk songs, Edwards and poet John Manifold produced the Bandicoot Ballads, trailblazing broadsheets which marked the beginning of Australia's folk music revival. He also published the first book of Australian folk songs with music. Moving to far North Queensland he made his living painting nudes, horses and bush landscapes. Discovering tradition-bearers all around him he became an irrepressible field collector making Cairns the folk song, yarnspinning and bush craft capital of Australia. He also documented meticulously a wealth of ancient Aboriginal rock art.A passionately independent free spirit and sole proprietor of his Rams Skull Press for over fifty years, Edwards published over three hundred titles, mostly on Australian folklore and traditional craft, the overwhelming majority of which he wrote and illustrated himself. Over forty years on, his pivotal publications The Big Book of Australian Folk Song, The Australian Yarn and Traditional Australian Bush Crafts remain standard references. His monumental twelve volume Index of Australian Folk Song warrants recognition as a national treasure.

This work presents research that reveals the itineraries of music teaching in three scenarios in the Blumenau Municipal Education Network: the Art subject; the School Bands and Fanfares Program; and the Early Childhood Education Musicalization Project. From these scenarios, the origins and trajectories of music teaching in the network are identified, permeated by school culture. As well as musical pedagogical practices, teaching conceptions, among other aspects that have marked this historical journey.

In 1931, the English designer Gerald Summers and his partner Marjorie Butcher opened their business, Makers of Simple Furniture, in London. Until 1940, the company produced hundreds of ingenious plywood designs that helped define the idea of the modern interior in Great Britain. Based on Marjorie Butcher's vivid recollections and a wealth of unpublished material-including photographs, personal correspondence, designs and workshop documents-the book traces the groundbreaking achievements of the furniture company best known for the iconic Bent Plywood Armchair .  The publication was supported in part by the Graham Foundationfor Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) is one of the foremost furniture designers of the twentieth century. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he worked as an engineer before starting his design career. In 1931, he and his partner, MARJORIE BUTCHER (1909-1996), opened Makers of Simple Furniture in London. They managed the firm for almost ten years, producing hundreds of pieces for the modern home. In 1940, wartime exigencies brought an end to the enterprise. They redirected their energy to Gerald Summers Ltd., a supplier of engineering parts. MARTHA DEESE is an authority on Gerald Summers. She earned a master's degree in decorative art history from Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parsons School of Design, New York, and worked for three decades as an administrator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Her groundbreaking article on Summers and his firm, Makers of Simple Furniture, published in the Journal of Design History in 1992, remains the principal source on the designer.
