The way to the heart is through the stomach - and perhaps this also applies to intercultural understanding. Most of Julia Goodman's ancestors were Eastern European Jews who emigrated to the USA at the beginning of the 20th century. Gabriele Edlbauer on the other hand grew up on an organic farm in the predominantly Catholic Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. While gnawing on chicken bones together, the two women came to chat about the significance of certain foods in relation to their own identity. After all, chickens feature in Julia's most important life memories. Since her family always had a chicken recipe at hand for every holiday, including the weekly Shabbat, it was no surprise that the bird eventually became Julia's favorite dish. Gabi's most prominent childhood memories of chickens are less culinary: the hens on the family farm mainly served an economic purpose.Through sharing their stories, they both soon realized that their connections with chicken and their respective artistic approaches were entangled in strange ways. In the process of cooking together, they developed a fascination with the idea of how certain dishes can convey or trigger very specific feelings. The result is a humorous, artistic attempt to expose complex feelings and hard truths in chicken recipes. This book is filled with emotional recipes - accompanied by creative serving suggestions - and invites you to express yourself through chicken.

The Italian occupation of Albania, which took place in April 1939, is a subject little covered in most texts pertaining to the history of our armed forces and is often mentioned in a few lines or described as an action of little importance and without difficulty. In reality, the invasion of the Kingdom of Albania was a wake-up call and showed all the inefficiency of the Italian Royal Armed Forces in a modern war as the Second World War would later be, which saw the Kingdom of Italy suffer defeat after defeat. What was supposed to be a 'walk in the park' cost the blood of Italian soldiers and sailors, especially in the area of Durres, and only the weakness of the military apparatus of the small Balkan state would not make the Italians pay dearly for the poor organization of the operation and logistical problems. The book, after a description of pre-1939 events, will focus on the stages of the invasion and then move on to a description of the integration of the Albanian armed forces into those of Italy.

Since the 1960s Anders Petersen has traveled extensively and photographed life beyond the margins of polite society for his acclaimed City Diaries. Petersen's is an indiscriminate and intensely empathetic eye, one shaped by a fundamental connection with those he photographs-"To me, it's all about people ... what they do, what they believe, their dreams, hopes, visions and virtues." His subjects, a world including prostitutes, transvestites, alcoholics and nighttime lovers-intimacy and conflict, joy and melancholy, clarity and ambiguity in equal measure-reveal his passion to identify and engage with subcultures and "life in the shadows," not merely to document them. To discover the gritty in the beautiful and the beautiful in the gritty, in impressionist images of deep blacks and stark contrasts which compellingly avoid cliché. Presenting photos made between 1967 and 2019, City Diary #1-7 contains all books in the series to date: re-prints of the first three-which received the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook of the Year Award in 2012-alongside four new volumes.

The Russian streltsy had a short, interesting, and later troubled history. Known as Orthodox 'old believers' that resented and refused western traditions, they were Russia's first permanent standing infantry with firearms - and this shows in their name, which roughly translates from the Russian word for 'shooter.' Created by Ivan the Terrible, this armed force was never disbanded, even in times of peace. Soldiers served for life, and they were nicknamed as 'stirrup' troops because they were usually always near the tsar's own stirrups. Often wielding both a musket and a poleaxe, they were a destructive force in Russia's army in the 16th and 17th centuries - fighting often behind a 'walking city' of wooden frames against forces such as the Tartars. However, their staunch believe in rejecting western ideology caused them to alienate themselves from Peter the Great, slaughtering his mother's family and dubbing him the Anti-Christ, ultimately leading to a failed rebellion and their complete dissolution from the Russian Army by 1720.The author of this book dives into the history of the streltsy, their outfits, and their weaponry; he presents images of what remains of streltsy flags; as well as showcases both flat and 3D miniatures of the streltsy in wargaming. Fifty pages of color plates and illustrations.
Critical Geography examines the power structures, inequality, and the dominant ideologies that shape physical space. By critically analyzing these forces, the publication stimulates conversations about social justice, environmental sustainability, and transformative change. The artistic practices featured in the book shed light on systemic oppression, violence, and pressing environmental issues, and encompass a wide range of image-based practices that make inequality visible in both colonial and postcolonial contexts, including mapping, social media, and technology. FOTOFEST is a Houston-based contemporary arts organization co-founded by photojournalists Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss. Call Me Lola is a moving photo essay by the acclaimed Israeli-American lens-based artist and documentarian Loli Kantor. For over twenty years, she combed through the family archives of her Polish-born father, a doctor and political activist. At the center of her work is her mother, Lola, who died in childbirth: a woman who manifests herself principally through images and stories rather than direct memories. The family documents and photographs that retrace the artist's personal history are shown alongside new camera-based works, resulting in a deeply subjective reflection on the most significant upheavals of the twentieth century: war and displacement, love and loss, trauma and grief. LOLI KANTOR (*1952) is an Israeli-American photographer whose work centers on personal and cultural memory. She lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas.
Since moving from Amsterdam to the rural Uckermark region in north-eastern Germany, artist Marieken Verheyen has undertaken small sensory expeditions into the fascinating forest areas just a short walk from her atelier. She searches for traces of their inhabitants and the people who use the forest and attempts to feel her way into the forest creatures' ways of seeing and thinking. In the process, Verheyen finds, again and again, that the entire world can be found compressed into this small area: contradictory ideas of nature, the often opposing interests of various users of the forests, and the destructive influence of the climate crisis. Her images also depict the irresistible yet elusive power and beauty of nature.
This book is a posthumous collective portrait of Chantal Akerman as one of the most influential filmmakers of our time, with contributions from people who admired her and worked closely with her.
