Six years after the birth of his first child, Gilles Pourtier delivers an intimate journey through the months that preceded him. Full-page black and white photographs function as clues to a transformation. They carry trivial memories and symbols, revealing, in filigree, the existential vertigo that prevails when one prepares to transmit life and therefore, the inevitability of death. They read like so many ultrasounds of this before, in which we meet children, adolescents and friends who are already parents. Gilles Pourtier frees himself from a painful story, that of a trying pregnancy. It is literally an introspective "echoing writing" that responds, in retrospect, to helpless empathy. This incommunicability is shared. t is expressed in the message he receives from the mother, as they are separated by a thousand kilometers: "If my tears flowed in your eyes" (si mes larmes coulaient dans tes yeux ) which he makes the starting point of the book.
Moving Frames addresses precise historical moments uniquely in a German context. Across films both in and outside the canon, this volume tackles those specific historical moments experienced in media forms to gauge the cultural, political, and transnational trends in humanity's desire for agency and how that agency is represented.

''Four thousand square foot of blue-flecked linoleum is decorated with maps of the world…. This random patchwork, traversed by thousands of people scuffing its surface, is slowly being worn away, the floor underneath emerging as new oceans eroding the graphic landmass. Fallen sticky price labels and other detritus settle across an ever-evolving cartography formed by human footfall.''Helen Sear reflects on the current ecological crisis and our shared responsibilities across countries and borders. It is a call for human collaboration to avert the permanent loss of other species, in an era that biologist E O Wilson has suggested might be named “The Age of Loneliness”.In 2018 and 2019 Sear spent several weeks in Durham North Carolina inside the vast warehouse premises of The Scrap Exchange, an organisation dedicated to re-diverting surplus materials from landfill and creating environmental awareness and community through reuse. It is a microcosm for something global, namely our human relationships with, and impact on the environment and our immediate surroundings.Constructing a makeshift studio on the shop floor she invited visitors to have their portraits taken, photographed hands holding chosen objects, sometimes recording brief conversations. Photographing strangers in the formal style of studio portraiture enabled a momentary stillness and connection amid the agitation of peripheral vision overload and the direct eye contact between subject and artist heightens the sense of a moment shared.Helen Sear’s practice focuses on the co-existence of human, animal, and natural environments and is rooted in an interest in Magic Realism, Surrealism and Conceptual Art. She studied Fine Art at Reading University and University College London, Slade School, her practice coming to prominence in the late 1980s, when she worked primarily with mixed-media installation, performance and video. Her photographic works became widely known in the 1991 British Council exhibition, De-Composition: Constructed Photography in Britain, Sear was the first woman to represent Wales with a solo exhibition at the 56th Venice Biennale 2015 presenting a suite of new works…the rest is smoke. Helen Sear currently lives and works in France.

The history of the quintessential Parisian perfumer Guerlain both influenced and was shaped by Parisian life, savoir faire, and culture. The house of Guerlain is a Parisian institution. Guerlain aficionados—from royalty and empresses, to celebrities, writers, and artists—have been featured in novels, song lyrics, movies, and artistic creations, all while exemplifying Parisian savoir faire and luxury. The Guerlain headquarters and laboratory on the rue de Rivoli in the heart of Paris feature a new scent laboratory and a rose garden, intrinsically binding the famous house to the city of light, which it so perfectly captures in each bottle of perfume. Traveling through two centuries of history at Guerlain, this book highlights the inextricable links between the house and the city: Guerlain changed Parisian life with its cosmetics and perfumes, yet could have existed nowhere else but in Paris. Guerlain’s creations, especially its perfumes, are put into historical and cultural context through a combination of interviews, images, and portraits of the people and products that played a role in the house’s story. This celebration of Guerlain, the quintessential Parisian perfumer, combines fashion, Parisian life and savoir faire, history, and the essence of beauty.
"...Pagnanös photographs remind us of the importance of documenting moments as they occur so that we can savour the pleasures of the past and look at the present with fresh eyes." - Huck Brooklyn¿s Empire Rollerdrome opened its doors in 1941 and soon became the borough¿s premier destination for recreational and competitive roller skating. But it wasn¿t until the late 1970s that the celebrated rink reached iconic status by replacing its organist with a live DJ, installing a state of the art sound and light system, and renaming itself after the nationwide dance craze it had helped to originate: the Empire Roller Disco was born. In 1980, Forbesmagazine sent the acclaimed street photographer Patrick D. Pagnano to document the Empire and its legendary cast of partygoers. The resulting photographs, gathered in TK for the first time, capture the vibrant spirits, extraordinary styles, and sheer joys of Brooklyn roller disco at its dizzying peak.
