In this volume of 50 striking images, the language of modern architecture is distilled into minimal geometric shapes and new perspectives. Set in stark black and white, this book is filled with pure visions of form.

A colorful, insider portrait of '70s surf culture, with a foreword by Pulitzer Prize-winning author William FinneganIf you were there, even just for some of it--Hawaii, California, surfing, the '70s--the memories and stories will flow freely from these photographs. Jeff Divine was there for all of it, and these images have been culled from an enormous personal archive. Divine was shooting for Surfer, the monthly magazine that was the bible of the scene. His photos from this archive show the precommercialized era in surfing when the hippie influence still held sway. Surfers had their own slang-infused language and were deep into a world of Mother Ocean, wilderness and a culture that mainstream society spurned. Surfboards were handmade in family garages, often made for a specific kind of wave or speed, for paddling, ease of turning, and featured all kinds of psychedelic designs. Some were even hollowed out to smuggle hash from Morocco. The color and black-and-white photographs collected here, taken throughout California on the coastlines at Baja, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, La Jolla, Malibu, San Clemente and Oahu, give a vivid image of this close-knit culture and the incredible athletic feats of its heroes and heroines. Raised in La Jolla, California, Jeff Divine (born 1950) started photographing the surfing world in 1966. He held jobs as photo editor for 35 years with Surfer magazine and Surfer's Journal. His works have been displayed worldwide in museums and galleries, as well as in books, magazines and media. In 2019 he was inducted into the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame for his contribution to surf culture in a career lasting 50 years.

((Please scroll down for english version))Tausende Kilometer mit dem Auto und der Kamera durch Los Angeles - Traum oder Albtraum? In seinem seit 2010 entstandenen Langzeitprojekt L.A. Dabei klingt L.A. Thousands of kilometers by car and camera through Los Angeles - dream or nightmare? In his long-term project L.A. CROSSING, which has been in the making since 2010, Jens Liebchen shows us the capital of unconditional automotive mobility like most of its inhabitants prefer to look at it: through the windows of their cars. Out of the moving car, Liebchen looks at a city that embodies the opposites of utopia and dystopia. L.A. Crossing itself sounds like the title of a movie, accordingly the street becomes a stage and the photography becomes a kind of still image. Bathed in the beguiling Californian light, the city appears fictitious and real at the same time. An icon of photographic art, Stephen Shore's image »La Brea/Beverly« serves as a theoretical starting point for Liebchen's work. Beginning with the »La Brea Matrix Project«, which was centered around said photo, Liebchen has reversed the common view and now looks back from the street to the city. Neither does he stop, like Lee Friedlander (in "America by Car"), nor does follow a strict gird like Ed Ruscha (in "Every Building on the Sunset Strip"). Liebchen drives and drives and drives. From the privileged and air-conditioned perspective of the driver's seat, the City of Angels lights and shadows are revealed.Jens Liebchen (*1970) has been working as a freelance photographer since his studies of ethnology. His works and have been exhibited worldwide and can be found, among others, in the collection of the DZ BANK Kunstsammlung in Frankfurt a.M. and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Liebchen lives and works in Berlin. He is represented by Springer Gallery.

During the post-war era in Communist East Germany in the seventies, Karen von Wagner is enjoying her life in East Berlin. She had grown up indebted and grateful to the GDR for giving her an excellent education in the arts in spite of what her father had done and was imprisoned for--guilty of war crimes as an SS Nazi. He had been arrested and taken to prison when she was barely five. At fifteen, she was told by an official he had died in Siberia. She had always been ashamed of him for his diabolical crimes and felt no remorse. In fact, she was glad he was dead.In her schooling, she achieved high marks in most of her classes, if not all. By twenty-one, she had become East Germany's famous actress and singer and, above all, a staunch communist.During a party in a ballroom she was hosting (her apartment in the same building), she rescues an unconscious American, Mike Whitman, from Russian robbers whom she believes had drugged him. The man is taken to her apartment by her uncle and a friend. Her grandfather, a doctor, saves Whitman's life. But soon, all three realize the robbers are KGB agents, and Whitman is a unique CIA spy. Karen demands that her uncle and grandfather, who live with her, turn him over to the authorities. But her two and only family members are against it.During Whitman's recovery, Karen discovers the true reason why her father was imprisoned. It was for being a pastor of an underground church in East Berlin. Her whole world turns upside down.

Driven by an eye for beauty and a passion for history, Britain's celebrated photographer Sir Don McCullin and writer Barnaby Rogerson set off across Roman Asia Minor. Their epic journey takes them from the plain of fabled Troy, via the splendors of Ephesus and the enchantment of Aphrodisias, to the mountain fastness of Hadrian's Sagalassos.
"Mary Crovatt Hambidge (1885-1973) was an aspiring actress and a professional whistler on Broadway when she met Canadian-born Jay Hambidge (1867-1924), an artist, illustrator, and scholar. Their relationship would prove to be both a romantic and an artistic partnership. Jay Hambidge formulated his own artistic concept, known as Dynamic Symmetry, which stipulated that the compositional rules found in nature's symmetry should be applied to the creation of art. Mary Hambidge pioneered new techniques of weaving and dyeing fabric that merged Greek methods with Appalachian weaving and spinning traditions. The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences, formed during the mid-1930s, provides an artists' community situated on six hundred rural acres in the north Georgia mountains where hundreds of visual artists, writers, potters, composers, dancers, and other artists have pursued their crafts. Dynamic Design details Jay Hambidge and Mary Crovatt Hambidge's cross-cultural and cross-historical explorations and examines their lasting contributions to twentieth-century art and cultural history. Virginia Gardner Troy illustrates how Jay and Mary were important independently and collectively, providing a wider understanding of their lives within the larger context of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art and design. They were from two different worlds, nearly a generation apart in age, and only together for ten years, but their lives intertwined at a pivotal moment in their development. They shared parallel goals to establish a place where they could integrate the arts and crafts around the principles of Dynamic Symmetry. Troy explores how this dynamic duo's ideas and artistic expressions have resonated with admirers throughout the decades and reflect the trends and complexities of American culture through various waves of cosmopolitanism, utopianism, nationalism, and isolationism. The Hambidges' prolific partnership and forward-thinking vision continue to aid and inspire generations of aspiring artists and artisans"--
