The vanguard dressed in orange with a hoodie underneath is operating a leaf blower. One of his guilty pleasures is to blow a small white plastic bag aimlessly through the pedestrian zone. I can't help being reminded of the film American Beauty-without the beauty but with a lot of noise. August, 2018: »On the edge of the historic center, the visitor can imagine what would have happened to old George Town if it hadn't been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2008. (Just take close look at the photographs!). What did happen to old George Town because of that privilege is a constant influx of tourist with a crave for Western-style cafés, serving cappuccino, cake and bagels. I immediately like it and catch sight of the huge apartment complex that has been build for the athletes of the 1984 Winter Olym-pics. Reach Out, that Moroder tune written for the Olympics, starts playing in my head while I sud-denly realize that the parking lot I am looking down at is that very one I had seen days ago in a photo- graph at the Historical Museum. "I Want Orgasms, Not Roses" handelt von Frauen, ihren Sex-Spielzeugen, ihrer Sexualität und den Ketten, die sie zerbrachen, um ganz sie selbst zu sein. Es ist eine Sammlung von Porträts und Interviews über Trauma, Scham, Begehren, Akzeptanz und Rebellion. Während Sexualität in der westlichen Popkultur frei diskutiert werden kann, sind fundamentalistische Werte auf dem Vormarsch. Abtreibungsrechte sind in der Diskussion, die Repräsentation von LGBTQ ist eingeschränkt.Die ungarische Fotografin Éva Szombat untersucht, wie wir offener und toleranter werden und unsere Frustrationen ablegen können. Sie trennt Scham von Sexualität durch den Einsatz von Fotografie, mittels der sie das Unsichtbare sichtbar macht und indem sie Frauen bittet zu zeigen, was sie begehren und wie sie es erreichen konnten.

Erste Biografie von Jerry N. Uelsmann, Pionier der Fotomontage innerer LandschaftenDer amerikanische Fotograf Jerry N. Uelsmann (1934-2022) war eine wegweisende Figur in der Geschichte der Fotografie. Mit seinen anfangs kontrovers rezipierten Fotomontagen und Doppelbelichtungen katalysierte Uelsmann den Übergang von modernistischer zu postmoderner Fotografie. Jahrzehnte vor digitalen Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen wie Photoshop schuf Uelsmann seine Fotomontagen aus mehreren Negativen in der Dunkelkammer. Seine surrealistischen, spirituellen und geistreichen Bilder entstanden seit den 1950er-Jahren bis an sein Lebensende. Die vorliegende erste Biografie, verfasst vonder schwedischen Fotohistorikerin und engen Freundin Uelsmanns Moa Petersén, behandelt seine Rolle als Erneurer traditioneller Paradigmen der Fotografie und den historischen Kontext, der ihn geprägt hat. Einige Werke werden hier erstmals veröffentlicht.

Texas-based photographer Hunter Barnes' (born 1977) black-and-white portraits of cultures and communities often ignored by the mainstream are renowned for their stark beauty. In 2006, Barnes travelled to Sri Lanka, intending to document the devastating aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. Instead, he arrived amid rapidly increasing tensions in the civil war and a breakdown of the ceasefire established four years previously. It has taken Barnes more than 15 years to process the experience: "what I lived and felt has been buried far in my mind," he writes, "sealed shut in a box of film and a journal I am just now able to read." Spending his time in the Eastern Province, Barnes documented the impact of the resurgence of the war on the Tamil people. In the medium of Ciné Collage, the artist interweaves literature, psychoanalysis, film and art history to create surreal-theatrical tableaus that use subtly-chosen narratives to subvert commonly accepted regimes of power and gaze. In painting, inner and outer abstract spaces touch to form color orgies that depict the universe as an interplay of an infinite number of elementary particles. Patricia Reinhart staging a self-portrait in a photo booth in a public area in Paris, selecting gestures and poses that call her own female identity into question. Oscillating between appropriation and dissolution of the history of visual media and literary models, Patricia Reinhart expands her own analyses, observations, and conceptions of the world in interrelated visual media. This monographic publication includes works from 2015 to 2022 by the artist, who resides in both Paris and Vienna.

In seinen Aufnahmen sucht Niels Schabrod nach den Ikonen Europas, nach historischen Momentaufnahmen in unserem kollektiven Gedächtnis, die unser Verständnis der Vergangenheit erklären und erhellen. Schabrod besuchte dazu vier Ereignisorte aus zwei Jahrhunderten: Waterloo, die Somme, die Stätten des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs und der alliierten Landung 1944 - Orte also, die klar auf historische Ereignisse verweisen, die als Erinnerungskultur und Geschichtspolitik das Werden, Wirken und Selbstverständnis der europäischen Union beeinflusst haben.Mit seinen Aufnahmen will Schabrod dazu einladen, über das Erbe dieser Ereignisse und unseren Umgang mit ihnen nachzudenken. Seine Fotografien zeigen nicht nur die Stätten selbst, sondern auch die Soldaten, Politiker, Reenactors und Touristen, die diese Schlachtfelder besuchen. Im Zusammenspiel mit Zitaten und Textfragmenten bilden sie ein Kaleidoskop, in dem Details aus Geschichte und Gegenwart unaufhörlich durcheinander geworfen und immer wieder neu zusammengestellt werden.

Teshima ist eine der 28 Inseln des Shiwaku-Archipels in Japan. Einst war die Insel berühmt für ihre Seestreitmacht; die Schiffsbau- und Navigationskunst ihrer Bewohner wurde hoch geschätzt und spielte eine wichtige Rolle im Seehandel. Heute hat Teshima nur noch ungefähr ein Dutzend Einwohner. Die terrassierten Felder, die einst die Berghänge bedeckten, wurden von Bambuswäldern verschluckt, mitsamt den noch erhaltenen Steinmauern. Der letzte Fischer der Insel starb Ende letzten Jahres; bis heute liegt sein Fischerboot vertäut im Hafen und schaukelt auf den Wellen. Dem stillen Schlaf dieser Insel zu lauschen, ohne ihn zu stören, führt uns Japans gegenwärtige Situation als Inselnation vor Augen. Kentaro Kumon (*1981) ist auf mehreren Gebieten aktiv, darunter Zeitschriften, Bücher und Werbung. 2012 wurde ihm der Newcomer-Preis der Photographic Society of Japan verliehen.

Pathé'O ist eine wahre Mode-Ikone. Der gebürtige Burkinabé ist weit über seine Wahlheimat Côte d'Ivoire hinweg bekannt. Sein visionäres Vermächtnis beeinflusst seit über 30 Jahren die ästhetischen Standards wie auch die Erfahrung von Mode auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent und führte vor Kurzem auch zu einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem Modehaus Dior. Designer*innen aus allen Generationen sind inspiriert von seiner ausgeprägten Designästhetik, seinem progressiven Ansatz in Nachhaltigkeitsfragen sowie von seiner Gabe, kulturelles Engagement mit unternehmerischer Kreativität zu verbinden. Lange Zeit war es für Politiker*innen und Prominente aus dem Showbiz in den westafrikanischen, ehemals französischen Kolonienüblich, sich westlich zu kleiden. Pathé'O verfolgte mit seiner Arbeit die klare Absicht, bei den Afrikaner*innen die Wertschätzung für einen einheimischen Modestil und eine lokale Industrie zu wecken. In den 80er-Jahren freundete sich Pathé'O mit Thomas Sankara an, dem Präsidenten von Obervolta (dem späteren Burkina Faso) und einem Verfechter des Panafrikanismus. Pathé'O wurde stark von Sankaras Entschlossenheit, den Lokalstolz und das kulturelle Erbe zu fördern beeinflusst und verwendete von diesem Zeitpunkt an ausschliesslich lokal produzierte Stoffe. Seine Kreationen wurden zu einer zeitgenössischen Hommage an kulturelles Erbe, Geschichte und Identität.Eine weitere prominente Begegnung erlebte Pathé'O mit Nelson Mandela, der sich als erster afrikanischer Präsident lieber in seine lebendige Designs und leichte Baumwollstoffe kleidete als in einen westlichen Business-Anzug. Ihm folgten bald weitere Staatsoberhäupter, sowie Stars aus Unterhaltungsindustrie und Sport und natürlich Madame et Monsieur Tout-le-Monde. Pathé'Os Stoffe sind sein Markenzeichen. Wie kein anderer bringt er globale Modetrends mit der gesamten Palette afrikanischer Textilien und seinem Fachwissen zusammen und hält so das lokale Erbe lebendig und entwickelt es stetig weiter. THE GLASS PLATES OF LUBIN features selections from the 2,700 glass photographic plates discovered in the attic of a nineteenth-century apartment building in the former Jewish section of Lublin, Poland. Taken between 1913 and 1930, they capture the teeming life of Lublin before the war, at a time when Jews composed a third of the city's population. The images include Jews and Poles, children and the elderly, young lovers, workers, athletes, and everyday people who posed for a camera long ago never dreaming that their portraits would one day be of interest to anyone. Unearthed in 2010, the plates have been restored and are now exhibited at the Grodzka Gate--NN Theatre Centre in Lublin, where curator Piotr Nazaruk and his staff continue to work assiduously to identify their subjects and solve the mystery of the photographer who took them.Photography.
