Taiwan, also called the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan, has remained a place not too well known to westerners. With a population of 25 million, Taiwan is the seventh largest economy in Asia and the 20th largest economy in the world. Yet there is much more to Taiwan than just the size of its economy, or that the Taiwanese are among the most affluent in Asia. Taiwan is an island of climate contrasts, a country with a rich culture going back centuries, and with vibrant major cities like Taipei, Tainan and Taichung City (as described in the book). It is a country with a mountainous inter-land, many rural farming villages, and tropical rain forests. Taiwan's people include the Austronesians (the first people to set foot in Taiwan), immigrants from Fujian province (the province opposite of Taiwan), many Chinese immigrants from northern China (who brought Mandarin), and the Hakka. The most important religions are Buddhism, Taoism and native Chinese ancestor worship. For the world traveler, or for an expatriate living there, Taiwan is worth exploring and knowing.

This book is photographic documentaion of the streets of New York City in 2020.As an Oakland, California native, I always dreamed to moving to the big city of New York. When I was finally able to make that dream a reality, I quickly learned NYC is much more than Broadway shows, Times Square and skylines. From afar New York City is as beautiful as ever but as the virus and political ineptitude began to tear apart New York I took the time to document what is happening beyond the post cards and mainstream news media. These are all ground level, no frills, iphone photos of the decay that occured in New York City in 2020.

Words have been used to start wars, end them.Used carelessly, words can break hearts, shed tears, and destroy families, friendships, lives.Words are powerful! But words can initiate change and birth new feelings of hope and positivity, happiness.Poetry is an art that allows the mind to wander, the heart to jump, and the soul to dance. In a collection of original poems and accompanying photographs, Dr. Rob Rafeek Henry offers lyrical insight into his time spent in the suburbs of Chicago as he experienced a variety of deep, intangible feelings that were constantly expressed and witnessed by not just himself, but also those who surrounded him. Shared with the intent of allowing others to feel connected in a divided world and provide a space for self-reflection, Henry's poems gently remind us that love, pain, and joy is witnessed by every living being and that we are never alone.Birthmarks and Bruises is a volume of poems and photographs that invites others to reflect on their own hearts, minds, and souls while navigating through the challenges of life.

Digitally printing photos on Japanese paper can yield tremendous results for photographers who are interested in experimenting with new methods. But beware: The common concept of how photographs should look will be challenged if you decide to use this technique. Carl-Evert Jonsson shares his experiences using the experimental technique in this book. After using Japanese papers (washi) for paintings and collages, he started to use the papers for his photos. This technique is not an alternative to classic fi lm-based photography. Ink is injected from a cartridge in a printer connected to a computer and printed on paper, in this case on washi. Darkroom facilities are not needed. All you need is a computer, printer, washi, and photos. The liveliness of washi fibres gives a softer result, and washi is more absorbent than Western papers, with the ink appearing integrated rather than sitting on the printed surface. Find out how to use a method that will give new life to photos with the insights in Using Japanese Paper for Digital Printing of Photographs.

There are photography books on the market today that consist of pictures and some pictures may include who is in the picture and the location of the picture. This book goes beyond just pictures because I include stories (personal thoughts) to some pictures to make them more interesting. There is a saying that goes: "e;Pictures tell a story."e; Well, there are some stories that are as interesting as the picture itself. There are three things that make this photography book different from others in the market:- There is a poem I wrote about September 11, 2001. The poem is after the pictures of the 911 memorial in New York. - If someone is looking for an Alzheimer's support group online then please see the flower picture for details. - The pictures in this book consist of various subjects instead of all on one subject

Learn to edit, organize, and present your best work-and become a better photographer in the process!Once a photographer has learned the fundamental techniques of photography-the basics of exposure, composition, and focus-their work often improves over the course of a few months or years. The world is full of wonders to photograph, and photographers can be pulled in many directions, excitedly chasing the light and the moment. This approach can certainly yield wonderful photographs, but over time the photographer's progress often begins to slow, and eventually, it can stop altogether. The reason for this is simple: creativity begins with image-making, but true progress comes with learning to edit and organize your work in ways that reflect your unique style and perspective, ways that offer you insight into how you can improve your work moving forward. In short, the key to becoming the best photographer you can be is to create an ongoing portfolio (or multiple portfolios) of your work.Based on an eight-week course taught by renowned photographer and author William Neill,The Photographer's Portfolio Development Workshopprovides the tools and skills you need in order to create a methodology that allows you to create a tightly edited portfolio of work, no matter your end goal: a box of prints, a book, an online presentation or website, or even a gallery exhibit.A portfolio is simply a collection of photographs with a consistent theme and consistent quality. In developing such a body of work, you will learn what your specific passions are, find focus for your work, and begin the iterative process of creating better and better photographs over time. By constantly working within a "e;feedback loop"e;-where you carefully assess and edit your images, note and learn from mistakes, then go out and create more photographs-you'll develop a portfolio that is constantly gaining in strength, quality, and impact. It's no surprise that you'll also become a much better photographer. No matter the photographic genre you work in, this book will teach you to objectively assess your work on both technical and aesthetic levels, establish a personal standard of quality, focus your efforts on new work, and become a better photographer. The book features eight lessons, along with assignments at the end of each lesson to propel you and your work forward. Throughout, Neill uses his own photographs to illustrate the process he has used for years to create multiple portfolios and books.TABLE OF CONTENTSLesson 1: Find Your FocusLesson 2: Thinking in ThemesLesson 3: Editing on a Technical and Aesthetic LevelLesson 4: Grouping by QualityLesson 5: Adding New WorkLesson 6: Improving Your PortfolioLesson 7: Where You Can Go From HereLesson 8: Putting It All Together

In 1977, Dave Sim (b. 1956) began to self-publish Cerebus, one of the earliest and most significant independent comics, which ran for 300 issues and ended, as Sim had planned from early on, in 2004. Over the run of the comic, Sim used it as a springboard to explore not only the potential of the comics medium but also many of the core assumptions of Western society. Through it he analyzed politics, the dynamics of love, religion, and, most controversially, the influence of feminism-which Sim believes has had a negative impact on society. Moreover, Sim inserted himself squarely into the comic as Cerebus's creator, thereby inviting criticism not only of the creation, but also of the creator. What few interviews Sim gave often pushed the limits of what an interview might be in much the same way that Cerebus pushed the limits of what a comic might be. In interviews Sim is generous, expansive, provocative, and sometimes even antagonistic. Regardless of mood, he is always insightful and fascinating. His discursive style is not conducive to the sound bite or to easy summary. Many of these interviews have been out of print for years. And, while the interviews range from very general, career-spanning explorations of his complex work and ideas, to tightly focused discussions on specific details of Cerebus, all the interviews contained herein are engaging and revealing.

A stunning collection of photographs of the LGBTQ community in Thailand, from one of the world's most renowned photographersSteve McCurry is the artist behind some of the most iconic images in contemporary photography. His 1984 portrait of Sharbat Gula (';the Afghan girl') on the cover of National Geographic remains widely recognized to this day. Now McCurry turns his attention to Thailand as part of a series of photobooks on LGBTQ communities around the world.Thailand has long had the reputation as one of the most gay-friendly destinations in Asia, particularly Bangkok with its nightlife and its relative openness and safety. While this may be true for tourists and expats, the idea of Thailand as a haven for LGBTQ people and for same-sex couples, heavily promoted by the tourist industry, does not necessarily extend to Thais themselves. While Thailand is home to the largest LGBTQ communities in Asia, the reality for them is less accepting. Discrimination and exclusion targeting LGBTQ people continues despite a nominally progressive stance on inclusion, and same-sex marriage remains illegal.Against this backdrop, McCurry's lushly colored photographs take us into the vibrant LGBTQ community in Bangkok, and this beautifully packaged, affordably priced book gives us a series of close to one hundred moving and intimate portraits of people who are no longer welcome in the community in which they grew up, but who have forged a new life and a new meaning of family in the queer community.Belonging was designed by Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios (EWS).

In 1976 a Jersey-based air taxi operator purchased two elderly Dakota aircraft for cargo charters as Air Atlantique. Thus began the saga of an airline that would eventually operate one of the largest fleets of Dakotas in the world, acquire four-engined vintage propliners, diversify into passenger charters and pleasure flying and oil-spill response work, and take over the lease on its Coventry Airport base. From here a fleet of historic aircraft sallied forth to participate in air shows around the UK. The impending retirement of the airline's founder Mike Collett brought about changes, but the freight charters and pleasure flying continued until new regulations brought passenger flying in the Dakotas to an end. Undaunted, Air Atlantique went on to open an aviation museum and visitor centre at Coventry. This is the story of a unique and much-loved British airline.

Susanne Bartsch has been living in New York since 1981, where she has created a dazzling Gesamtkunstwerk through the creation of her iconic looks and legendary parties. As an impresaria, artist-agent, and big-hearted, open-minded hostess, she moves virtuosically at the intersection of fashion, make-up, activism, art, music, and performance. In a career as interior designer, researcher, author, and teacher that has spanned more than five decades, Verena Huber has engaged profoundly with the issues of living and staying. To this day, she continues encouraging people to question spaces and objects and to put them in new contexts. Uncompromising in her approach and always looking beyond national borders, she has been hugely influential in contemporary Swiss interior design. Since the early 1980s, artist Beat Streuli has used photography and video to create works of strong visual force. Although cityscapes form the backdrop of his images, it is always people rather than architectural or structural elements that are in his focus. Streuli's images have made him one of the world's foremost exponents of street portraiture. Switzerland's Federal Office of Culture has awarded the 2022 Swiss Grand Award for Design to Susanne Bartsch, Verena Huber, and Beat Streuli. From the depths of their existential angst, these profound pooches ask some of the most pertinent questions of their time.'What if I never find out who's a good boy?''Is it better to have eaten something and thrown it up, and then eaten it again, than never to have eaten it at all?''What if the tail I've been chasing all these years is really chasing me?'These are just a few of the philosophical questions plaguing these contemplative canines. Join them in their quest for the truth - can a soft toy cushion the harsh blow of reality? Is there a meaning to life, or is it all just about treats? Is the fleeting happiness that comes from playing with a ball worth the crushing disappointment when it's taken away? You'll never see life the same way again.

(English Version below)Bangkok Diary, 7.-14. März 20168. März, 2016: »The city has changed dramatically. It is turning into another Singapore with skywalks, loads of air-conditioned malls, and Western-style coffee stalls. It's easier now to buy a vanilla latte than a pad thai in the streets of the capital of Siam.«(Peter Bialobrzeski)Über die City DiariesDie Stadt zu Beginn des 21. Weitere Bände erscheinen in loser Reihenfolge.About the City DiariesThe city at the beginning of the 21st century is the major theme of Peter Bialobrzeski's City Diaries. In the project, started in 2013 and so far comprising of 19 volumes, he has been investigating whether the pre-conception of a city, a product of prejudices, personal observations and what is conveyed by the media, can be transformed into a specific image. Whether Wuhan or Wolfsburg - Bialobrzeski is interested in the cultural differences increasingly concealed by globalization, which he makes visible by means of a seemingly objectifying aesthetic. Current political and social developments are also reflected in Bialobrzeski's images and diary entries. The format and page count of all titles are identical. This systematic approach allows for a comparative view of a wide array of different urban situations. Further volumes will be published intermittently.
