Freya Najade captures moments of unexpected beauty and curious encounters in east London''s abundant Hackney Marshes. Focussing on the intricate balance of the wildlife and people who find freedom in the open fields and riverbanks, these visually arresting images - many taken during the confined days of the pandemic - remind us of the hidden poetry in the city''s landscapes. From young bathers escaping lockdown to patches of overgrown woodland, Najade embraces the natural exuberance of these wilder spaces while mourning the damage we do to them.

An Ode to the Intelligence of the Human Body...I didn't know this book wanted to be a book. This began as the seed of a curious idea. A desire to create space for people to express themselves without limitations, and a calling to witness this process through my camera lens. What has emerged is a passionate combination of photography, poetry, embodied wisdom, storytelling, and holistic awareness for connecting to the emotional body. When people are given a safe space, time, and permission to express themselves authentically and without judgment, amazing things can happen. Liberation is experienced, freedom is found, perspectives are shifted, pain is melted; a trust between the body and those that inhabit that body is reinforced. This book is a representation of this process.

In his series of paintings 'Environmental Catastrophes Top Ten And Other Abominations' Rubsamen pokes fun at our need to make lists and hierarchies to codify the bad and the good. If we Google 'Worst man-made environmental disasters in history' the screen fills with sites offering lists. If we toggle the images button on the top of the page, the lists become images. Finding a commemorative image of an ecological disaster, an environmental tragedy or a moral trauma involves a set of priorities both aesthetic as well as pragmatic. The image must carry the message and it must have the potential of timelessness. The image must be beautiful as well as horrific. In this important book Rubsamen and Skarli investigate, pictorially and theoretically, the new complexity evolving in the relationship between nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and globalization in the rituals of commemoration.

Gas, Food, and Lodging is a series of paintings by Glen Rubsamen from 2020. The book includes 19 color illustrations from this series and an essay explaining the social and political implications of the works by Iván Aimé Valenciano. In these works, Valenciano explains, "Chain store signage is juxtaposed with telecommunications apparatus and vestiges of roadside architecture and vegetation. These disparate compositional elements fuse into a personal, local, and heterogeneous intimacy that is then re-embedded in the indigenous structure of the landscape. Rubsamen's paintings address the subterfuge of cultural imperialism and its local adaptation; they depict moments of systemic conflict: standardization, efficiency, calculability, predictability, the chaos of historic neglect and natural decay. The paintings are infused with an apocalyptic calm, as if caught in the temporary stillness of a hurricane's eye. They suggest a global post-pandemic society that roams about in cars looking for quick nutrition and the temporary safety of chain stores, motels, and gas stations. Gas, Food, and Lodging becomes a mantra of identity, a comfort zone, the way nationality used to be..."

The “intimate and expansive” (Time) memoir of “one of the most important artists working in the world today” (Financial Times), telling a remarkable history of China over the last hundred years while also illuminating his artistic process   “Poignant . . . An illuminating through-line emerges in the many parallels Ai traces between his life and his father’s.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)   ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, BookPage, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews   Once a close associate of Mao Zedong and the nation’s most celebrated poet, Ai Weiwei’s father, Ai Qing, was branded a rightist during the Cultural Revolution, and he and his family were banished to a desolate place known as “Little Siberia,” where Ai Qing was sentenced to hard labor cleaning public toilets. Ai Weiwei recounts his childhood in exile, and his difficult decision to leave his family to study art in America, where he befriended Allen Ginsberg and was inspired by Andy Warhol and the artworks of Marcel Duchamp. With candor and wit, he details his return to China and his rise from artistic unknown to art world superstar and international human rights activist—and how his work has been shaped by living under a totalitarian regime. Ai Weiwei’s sculptures and installations have been viewed by millions around the globe, and his architectural achievements include helping to design the iconic Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing. His political activism has long made him a target of the Chinese authorities, which culminated in months of secret detention without charge in 2011. Here, for the first time, Ai Weiwei explores the origins of his exceptional creativity and passionate political beliefs through his life story and that of his father, whose creativity was stifled. At once ambitious and intimate, Ai Weiwei’s 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows offers a deep understanding of the myriad forces that have shaped modern China, and serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to protect freedom of expression.

The art of HR Giger (1940-2014), Swiss-born creator of the legendary monster in Ridley Scott's movie Alien, is currently experiencing a renaissance and is featured in exhibitions as well as in magazines around the globe. This lavish large-format volume offers never-before-seen insights into Giger's private house and garden, both of which are populated by biomechanical sculptures, airbrush paintings, Alien furniture, objects, prints, and self-portraits. French photographer Camille Vivier-best known for her work for Stella McCartney and Cartier-enjoyed exclusive access to the artist's Zurich home and studio for this book, where she worked on her own as well as with models in a series of photo sessions. Vivier's around 200 photographs form an atmospheric tribute to the arguably most distinguished representative of Fantastic Realism. In addition to images of Giger's studio and his life-size sculptures, Vivier has also documented some hundred objects and artworks, as well as his famous Alien-style garden railroad. An essay by French publicist Farbrice Paineu places HR Giger's art in the wider context of pop culture and the genre of horror movies.

This book explores a uniquely Roman type of building, the palazzina-a four- or five-story residential structure of the most meticulous design, built during the Italian economic miracle between the 1950s and '70s. A Beautiful Game focuses on the extraordinarily imaginative entrances of these buildings.Over many years, Heiner Thofern photographed palazzine during his evening wanderings throughout the north and west districts of Rome. It was the intricately conceived and constructed entrances, realized mostly through collaborations between architects and artists, that particularly caught his eye. Beautiful Games reveals the varied treasures of Thofern's photographic archive, a rich collection that allows us to examine the particular sense of play and passion for beauty that shapes this era of Italian creativity, a delight in la bella figura, and a desire to constantly reinvent the possibilities of design and architecture.

I had either seen or heard about them. Whether they are good or bad is beside the point..."e;A nameless graphic designer is haunted by the concentration camp in which he was once interned. Obsessed with his past, as well as Italy's present 'economic miracle', he retreats to a rural villa where he decorates the rooms with "e;arrows, signs, advertisements"e;; invents a new, purposefully incomprehensible typeface; and attempts to devise a marketing campaign for stones. Upon finally returning to Milan life becomes even more unbalanced. He loses his job and acquires a mistress whom he soon confuses both with his wife and the memory of the young, Czech woman he abandoned at the end of the war. Known primarily as a screenwriter for Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini and Andrei Tarkovsky among many others, Tonino Guerra also wrote poetry and fiction. Reissued to mark the centenary of his birth, and with a new introduction by acclaimed cultural critic Michael Bracewell, Equilibrium remains a relevant, powerful, and intensely visual account of a broken but (post-)modern man.
